Henry VIII King of
England 1509
Wants a male heir but first wife only gives him a
daughter.
Asks the Pope to annul the marriage. The
Pope refuses.
Henry calls Parliament into session in order to
separate England from the Catholic Church.
Parliament creates the Anglican Church, aka,
The Church of England. England’s monarch is
the head of the new church.
Giving himself permission, Henry divorces his
first wife and begins a merry-go-round of wives.

What happened after Henry died?
1547 - Edward becomes king at age 10. Relies
on adults for advice. They are all Protestant
so England remains so. Only lives as King for 6
years.
1553 - Mary (1st marriage) rules. Takes the
country back to Catholicism. She is not liked
by the people. Dies in 5 years.
1558 - Elizabeth I changes England back to
Protestant. Reestablishes the Church of
England as the ONLY legal church. This will
cause problems in about 100 years.
