Paleo-Indians The first people in North America. Crossed over the Bearing Sea on a
land bridge during the end of the glaciers.
Clovis
Hunter / Gatherers Lived near the Great Plains. Artifacts were discovered
near Clovis, N.M. Used stones & sticks to hunt.
Folsom
Artifacts found near Folsom N.M. Used spears to hunt. Also had stone
tools.
Plano
Hunter / Gatherers that lived near the Great Plains. Started to stay in one
area rather than be nomadic.
Moundbuilders
Adena
Lived in the Ohio River Valley about 500BC. Traded with other clans.
Hopewell
These natives were part of the Hopewell Exchanged System.
Natives traded with each other all over the eastern part of the U.S.
Mississippian The most advanced farming society north of Mexico. By 1100 they had a
city as large as London.
Southwestern
Mogollon
Mostly agricultural from they lived from 140 to 1400. Also known for
pottery.
Hohokam
Best known for their irrigation ditches used for farming in the desert.
Some dwellings looked like what they had in Mexico.
Anasazi
Lived in multi-story adobe buildings.
Built on mesas or high cliffs.
