The
Progressives
• Populist Movement – Brought the farmers
together to help with their problems.
• Problem – The industrial revolution made the
tools to grow more crops.
This reduced the price. (Supply & Demand)
To get enough $$, farmers grew even more
and prices dropped.
• National Grange – United the farmers to help
with legislation. Reform the government.
• Interstate Commerce Act – Made the RR
charge everyone the same amount for
shipping.
Progressive Movement
Main goal was to reform society.
1) Clean up the way people did business.
2) Raise the sanitation standards.
3) Better the housing industry.
The idea was to take the power from the
rich and give it back to the regular
people.
Initiative – Referendum - Recall
• Three ways to give power back to the people.
• Initiative – Regular people sign a petition to start a new
law. Next the people vote on it. This bypasses the
legislature.
• Referendum – Same process, but this reviews existing
laws.
• Recall – This allows the people to remove elected
officials.
• AZ Statehood – We almost didn’t become a state
because we had recall of federal judges in out
constitution. We had to remove it.
Progressive Amendments
• 16th – Income tax. Make the rich pay more
for the government than poor or regular
people.
• 17th – Direct election of Senators. Originally
the state legislatures picked a state’s
Senators. This took the power away from the
state legislature (rich) and let the regular
people vote for their Senators.
• 18th – Prohibition. Stopped the manufacture, sale and
distribution of alcohol.
• 19th Amendment – Women’s right to vote. Power away
from men and let more regular people vote.
