Mrs. Swingle’s 6th Grade Math Class Welcome to a new school year! We have been very busy getting to know each other and establishing a routine. Please take some time to look over the following topics that will be important to your students’ Math class. This is yours to use as reference throughout the year. There is a plethora of information, so hang in there! Let’s have a terrific school year!!! Expectation RESPECT – yourself, classmates, staff and school/district rules. Students are expected to be respectful during the school day. Should a student choose to become disrespectful, they can expect a verbal warning, a lunch conference, a phone call home, or to be sent to the office. Absence Policy If you are absent you have as many days as you were gone to make up your work. It is your responsibility to see me and collect the work you missed. The majority of our class work is completed within your team. There is a possibility that you will need to work those problems on your own or with students from other classes. You may be asked to come in during study hall, lunch, before or after school. Common Core http://www.corestandards.org This year the Westerville City School District will continue implementation of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM). These standards consist of two parts; the practice standards and the content standards. The eight Mathematical Practice Standards indicate “HOW” students will demonstrate their understanding and the Content Specific Standards detail “WHAT” mathematical concepts and procedures students will learn. Please visit the Common Core website listed above for additional details. Textbook www.cpm.org The textbook that has been adopted by the district is College Preparatory Mathematics. The text is structured to actively involve every student in the process of learning mathematics. The problem-based lessons provide a balance of basic skills, conceptual understanding, and problem solving strategies. Each lesson has a mathematical objective and focuses on one or more of the mathematical practices. The course contains all of the content and practice standards that Common Core State Standards require, which in turn will be reflected in the new Common Core Assessments, implemented during the 2014-2015 school year. There is a parent section on the website with additional information about the design of the text, its research base, Parent Guides, Homework Help and much more. Students will have access to an online textbook. They will receive a code in class. Electronic Versions of the textbook have been provided for each student: Student URL: ______http://sw8470.textbooks.cpm.org_______________ Students can choose from five different usernames and passwords that will be posted on my teacher website Materials (no calculator needed) 1 ½” or 2” binder Composition book pack of graph paper pack of notebook paper folder pencils Forms of Communication Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. If we all work together, we can make sixth grade mathematics a positive experience! swinglek@wcsoh.org ● (614) 797- 6700 (Walnut Springs Main Office) ● Visit our class http://www.westerville.k12.oh.us/olc/teacher.aspx?s=5499 ● Sign up for Remind to receive class texts. Text @6mathsw to (513)445-6150 Your grade will consist of the following components: Homework (10%) http://www.cpm.org/students/homework Homework is designed to offer students s p a c e d practice with past material and to help lay a foundation for future learning. All homework is assigned from the Review & Preview sections of the textbook. These problems spread the practice over several days and weeks so that students have time to become proficient with ideas and skills. This promotes the retention of the big ideas throughout the course. Collaborative Work (30%) Our classroom is designed to help you take responsibility for your learning. You will be expected to work in “study teams” on a regular basis. Roles will be assigned, which will not only help you master the mathematical concepts, but also promote the development of the 21st Century skills you need to be successful in college and the work force. Collaborative Work will consist of problems completed in class, filling out learning logs, participating in class room conversations, following Team Norms, Team Assessments and any additional work completed during class time. Assessments (60%) Individual Check-In: These are given about every three weeks. It is possible that check-in will occur in the middle of units. The ultimate goal is that students will master material over time. With this in mind, individual check-in days will be a chance for students to show what they know. To promote long term retention of concepts, all individual assessments will be created using approximately 60% of previously taught material and 40% new material. Recently introduced material will most likely not be assessed until the next check-in to allow ample time for students to achieve mastery.
