Mrs. Lydia D Halgren 2015 – 2016 Personal Finance – MA35 Welcome to the 2015-16 school year at Mountain View High School. Course Description: This course introduces students to the basics of financial literacy including such topics as creating personal financial goals, saving and investing, banking, using debit and credit cards, making major purchases, paying payroll and other taxes, and purchasing insurance. By emphasizing the importance of setting goals and creating a financial plan, students learn to think before spending. Students will learn how credit scores can impact one’s ability to secure a loan and, in some cases, determine whether they will be hired for a job. Students will also become familiar with some of the reality that faces everyone when they get their first job, their first apartment, or just take on more personal financial responsibilities. Student Responsibilities: 1. Be on time for class. 2. Complete all in-class and homework assignments with pride in your work, and meet deadlines. 3. Come to class with necessary materials. 4. No electronic devices should be seen or heard once you have entered the classroom. Absences and Tardies: Absences: It is the responsibility of the STUDENT to find out what they missed using the calendar on the whiteboard, or by checking my district web page. Make-up work: If you have an excused absence you will receive one day per day you were absent to turn in make-up work. It is the STUDENT’s responsibility to get the make-up work turned in. Late work may be turned in up to the end of the unit for partial credit. Tardies: Tardies can only be excused through the office, no parent notes please. If a tardy is unexcused, and the student has missed any point earning portion of the class period, they are unable to make the points up. If a tardy reaches 10 minutes or beyond, the student will be marked absent. I expect you to put effort toward learning the material. You will have assignments both in and out of class. You should be able to feel proud of what you turn in. Quizzes: Expect section quizzes once within each two weeks period or unit. Tests: Tests are given after every unit. All tests will be returned to me after reviewing the graded exams. We will do test corrections in class. We will get partial credit back for test corrections. A final exam will be given at the end of each quarter as well as a cumulative exam at the end of each semester. Materials (recommended) -A three ring binder with tabs -A folder with pockets -Pencil, eraser, pen -A planner (replacements can be purchased at the bookstore) *You will be given a copy of each unit as a handout to be used during class and at home. You are responsible for having these handouts with you each day. If you lose the handouts you will become accountable for the replacement. Tutoring: I am available Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday for tutoring from 7:30 to 8:00 in the classroom. I am also available for extra help during lunch and after school from 3:00 to 3:30.
