Dear Parents and Students: Welcome to the Mesa High Mathematics program. A variety of math programs are offered by our department to meet the needs of your children. There is so much to learn and to do, and Mesa will challenge your child. Students will be learning and applying skills including note taking, test taking, memorizing, and organizing. The mathematics department would like to share with you some suggestions for success as we together encourage your child to achieve his/her potential. Parents are a very important resource to students and teachers. According to the research and many years of teaching experience, when parents, teachers, and students work together, the student’s performance is enhanced. Apathy becomes a major deterrent to success. Remind your child often of the importance of getting a good, solid education and demonstrating a positive work ethic daily. Class work will usually be assigned each day. We as teachers need the student to complete the assignment at home if he/she was unable to finish it in class. You can help in the student’s learning process by checking and making sure the daily assignments are completed. This support will assist us in helping the student master the learning on tests, such as the AZMerit test. Throughout the year, testing will be conducted to assure future placement in classes suited to the student’s ability. Grades may not be what they were. In high school, the grade will reflect what is learned. Students are responsible for thoroughly learning the concepts taught. Ask questions when you do not understand a concept. Be sure you are working to the best of your ability every day. The following grading scale will be used: 90 - 100% grade of A 80 - 89 grade of B 70 - 79 grade of C 60 - 69 grade of D below 60 grade of F Should any student need or desire extra help in their mathematics work, teachers are available most mornings and afternoons and/or by appointment. If you have any questions regarding the math program, please call me at 472-5844 or email me at acoury@mpsaz.org. I look forward to an exciting year. Sincerely, Ms. Andrea Coury (Mathematics Teacher) See reverse side for rules.. I will try to keep our students informed to any changes throughout the year. 1. An assignment is usually given daily. The class will go over the assignment the following day. Always do your homework, because of homework quizzes. Quizzes are frequently given, to check for understanding of the material. See a math teacher before/after school if help is needed on any assignment. 2. Proper heading for math assignments includes; Name, first and last, Date, Period, and Assignment. Notes are usually taken every day. 3. Math assignments must show all work. 4. The student is responsible for getting assignments missed during absences. The teacher’s assignment calendar is available at any time. The same amount of time to make up the work as the days absent will be allowed. 5. The student is responsible for scheduling any test missed during an absence. QUARTER GRADES The student’s grade will be calculated using the following percentages. Students may check their portals to check their progress. I try to update every week or every other week.
