Snapshot Writing
Purpose: Employ good writing skills in the areas of syntax, diction, and use of details.
Overview: Capture a moment or slice of time in words, using the most descriptive writing you can in
the fewest words possible, while developing sentences that enhance the readability of your piece. You
may write about any moment or event, even a thought. Just as a camera can capture only a moment,
you are doing so in words.
Details
 Write 2 to 3 “word photos” each with 100 words or less.
 Suggest: Write in present tense and in 3rd person point of view.
 Use no “to be” verbs and limit articles (the, a, an) to one or eliminate them altogether.
 You may use fragments for effect, but they must be unmistakably so.
 Use lively verbs and specific nouns.
 Be descriptive and detailed.
 Make every word count.
 Get rid of the excess and avoid wordiness.
 Choose concrete over abstract. A good photo will evoke a reaction from those viewing it, for
example a happy or sad memory. Your words should do the same. A poor or posed or out of
focus photo will not, just as clichés, abstractions, tired words, etc. will cause your writing to be
“out of focus.”
Typed. Readable font.
