Report Prepared for NCATE Accreditation by Ione T. Damasco, Cataloger Librarian/Teacher Education Subject Selector Standard 6e. Unit Resources including technology 3. What library and curricular resources exist at the institution? How sufficient and current are these resources? How accessible are resources to candidates, including candidates in off-campus and distance learning programs, through electronic means? Roesch Library is the primary location for both print and electronic access to books, reference materials, audiovisual materials, periodicals, and government documents. In addition to the physical holdings, Roesch Library provides online access to numerous electronic resources for both on campus and remote users with a valid University ID and password. The online catalog and most electronic resources are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week through the library’s website both on campus and remotely. General information about the library and access to its online catalog can be found at http://www.library.udayton.edu. Collections Roesch Library continuously enhances its collection through the acquisition of print, electronic, microform, and other media resources that support the teaching and research of faculty and students in the School of Education, as well as other areas of study. For FY08, Roesch Library circulated a total of 66,866 items, with 32,351 local renewals. The library has an annual allocation for the purchase of new materials in the field of teacher education. Individual faculty members in the Department of Teacher Education submit requests to his/her departmental library liaison, who then forwards requests to the librarian subject selector. The subject selector is responsible for the overall collection development and management of teacher education materials in the general collection. The librarian regularly evaluates the collection to ensure currency of materials, and works closely with departmental faculty to ensure appropriate materials are purchased each year to support the curriculum. A sampling of recent teacher education acquisitions and their usage statistics can be found in Appendix A. Monographs Roesch Library holds roughly 1,302,714 total volumes, including 928,723 print volumes and government documents and another 373,991 microform volume equivalents. Roesch Library contains an extensive reference collection as well as a circulating collection that is distributed among three floors. Roesch Library is also a federal depository, receiving about 39% of the available U.S. documents distributed through the depository system. The library also collects, although it is not a depository for, state and local documents. These resources, housed in the government document collection, provide a wealth of statistical data on national, regional, state, county, and city demographics. Roesch Library is a member of the OhioLINK consortium, a group of 90 Ohio college and university libraries and the State Library of Ohio that share library resources. Students, staff and faculty have even greater access to materials through OhioLINK. The shared catalog provides access to more than 47.6 million items statewide. Users can request materials through OhioLINK, which are usually delivered within three working days. For FY08, 15,901 volumes were borrowed through OhioLINK. More information about OhioLINK can be found at http://www.ohiolink.edu. Serials and electronic resources Roesch Library provides on campus and remote access to numerous electronic resources, including over 200 databases, more than 40,000 e-books, and 11,350 full-text, open access and subscription-based electronic journals. Electronic access is also available both on- and off-campus to over 200 different article databases. For a complete listing of these databases, see http://library.udayton.edu/research/article/alpha.php. Journal articles are accessible in a variety of ways, both in print and electronically. The library maintains current print subscriptions to 1,608 print periodicals. A list of current print periodical subscriptions purchased specifically on the teacher education fund is located in Appendix B. The library also maintains print subscriptions for other journals in the fields of counselor education and educational administration, which can be used by all students, faculty, and staff (Appendix C). As stated previously, electronic articles are accessible through individual online journal access and through database aggregators, such as JSTOR, ERIC, Education Research Complete, Education Abstracts, and PsycINFO. Sample usage data for these resources can be found in Appendix D. Teacher education students also have access to LearningExpress Library, a comprehensive, interactive online learning platform of practice tests and tutorial courses. Students can prepare for CBEST, PRAXIS I, and PRAXIS II testing. Library facilities and services Roesch Library is open staggered hours over the course of the semester, which adjusts as student workload grows. The library is open 24 hours a day the week before and the week of final exams. On average, the library is open 114 hours per week. The reference desk is open approximately 73 hours per week. Numerous individual and group study spaces are available throughout the library. The library has roughly 1,200 seats available to users. The library features modular and mobile furniture, conducive to group work, as well as quiet spaces designated for individual study. Reference assistance is provided in person, via email, via telephone and through an instant messaging program. Individual research consultations with subject librarians are also available by appointment. Library instruction services are provided for specific courses based upon faculty requests. Librarians teach sessions devoted to research skills and library resources to undergraduate and graduate students, in consultation with teaching faculty for those courses. The library has a classroom that holds 40 students and is outfitted with a projector, an instructor’s workstation and student terminals. Numerous computer resources are available to users throughout the library. There are 20 computer workstations in the reference room, plus one adaptive workstation and two networked printers. The computers in the reference room provide Internet access, in particular to the online library catalog and article databases. The library also offers wireless network connectivity for laptop users throughout the building. The 2nd floor houses a general use computer lab. This lab houses 50 computer workstations, plus two printers and four scanners. These workstations provide Internet access, including access to the online library catalog and article databases; and they also contain a host of software products, including the Microsoft Office suite and specialized software such as ArcGIS, SPSS, RefWorks and more. Two of these workstations are also adaptive workstations. For more information, see http://library.udayton.edu/services/computer/. In addition to standard computer workstations, the 2nd floor of Roesch Library also houses several Media Pods, located in the Group Project Space. Media pods are specially equipped computer workstations that allow students to create and edit digital images, video recordings and audio files. Students may also borrow audio and video recording equipment to create content for presentations. Faculty and graduate students have extended borrowing privileges, which includes more materials for longer borrowing times. The library offers course reserves for physical items such as books and print articles as well as electronic reserves, wherein library staff scans articles that are made available to students electronically. Library staff can also assist faculty with linking articles found in proprietary databases to course management packages such as WebCT and Isidore. As stated previously, users can request additional materials not held physically by Roesch Library through the OhioLINK consortium, and are typically delivered within three business days. Materials not held by member institutions in Ohio can be requested through interlibrary loan. In those instances where certain journal articles are not available in print or online through normal library resources, users can request copies via interlibrary loan. Appendix A.
