In all the comparison
phrases, the adjective,
adverb or noun goes
between the words. (If it
is an adjective, it will
agree in number and
gender with the subject
of the comparison).
Yo tengo más dinero que
ella.
Mari es menos tímida
que Lupe.
Jorge y tú quieren pollo
tan mucho como el
bistec.
When making
comparisons,
más … que
is used to say “more
than”:
Soy más baja que el
profesor.
I am shorter than the
teacher.
Alberto es más
inteligente que su
hermana.
Albert is more
intelligent than his
sister.
When comparing a
noun,
más … que
can also be used:
Ella tiene más zapatos
que yo.
She has more shoes than
me.
Menos … que
is used to say “less
than”.
Mi perro es menos feo
que tu perro.
My dog is less ugly than
your dog.
Ellos son menos
atléticos que nosotros.
They are less athletic
than us.
When comparing
a noun,
menos … que
can also be used:
Mi profesor califica
menos examenes que tu
profesora.
My teacher grades less
exams than your teacher.
To say objects are
equal,
tan … como
is used (if what is
being compared is a
trait, not a noun):
El carro es tan rápido
como un tren.
The car is as fast as a
train.
Nuestra escuela es tan
aburrida como la
escuela de nuestro
primo.
Our school is as boring
as our cousin’s school.
If what is being
compared is a noun,
tanto … como
is used instead.
Tanto has four forms (tanto,
tanta, tsntos, tantas) because it
agrees in number and gender
with the object compared.
Escribo tantos papeles
como escribes.
I write as many papers
as you write.
Hay tantas chicas como
chicos a la fiesta.
There are as many girls
as boys at the party.
There are additional
phrases you can use to
make comparisons.
These words are
MEJOR (better), PEOR
(worse), MAYOR (older)
and MENOR (younger).
Mi chaqueta es mejor
que tu chaqueta.
My jacket is better than
your jacket.
Fremont es peor que
Shepherd.
Fremont is worse than
Shepherd.
