DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY AND SOCIAL MEDICINE MONTEFIORE MEDICAL CENTER ALBERT EINSTEIN COLLEGE OF MEDICINE DFSM Monthly Electronic Newsletter - Vol 1.2, March 2005 This is the second of our new monthly newsletters for the Department of Family and Social Medicine. We hope that as we all get used to this format, it will be easier for us to keep abreast of the many activities in which we are all engaged. This is meant to be an informal process which can evolve as we see what we have to share. This is meant to include all aspects of our department: clinical & research, East Campus and West Campus, all residency tracks, to include attendings, residents, and administrative staff. Different from other newsletters, it is not our intention to nag you all for submissions. Rather, if you have something to share, we hope that you will let us know. The section headings we plan to use include: Publications, Presentations, Grants & Awards, Clinical Initiative and Updates, Arrivals and Farewells, Schedule Highlights, Personal Happenings, Volunteer Opportunities, and Classified Ads. We welcome your feedback! Remember the deadline for submissions is the 20th of each month! We look forward to hearing from you! Tracers will be performed in the following areas: medication management, infection control, and patient unit tracers. Tracers are conducted by surveyors without a schedule therefore there will be no schedule posted prior to the visit. The Regulatory Affairs Department asks that you make yourselves available if they visit your service/unit. Birthing Bar Used At Weiler Hospital A Family Practice patient wanted to squat . . . and she did. Mother, baby and Drs Esteban, Reyes and Williams are all doing fine. 1 And to review from last month: 1. Next version of Last Word (CIS) is rolling out in June - we will have an electronic inbox where lab reports will go to rather than paper. This will free up our clerical staff to better support care. Jon Swartz is working with Medical Directors and the lab to work out a system for resident's labs that will assure appropriate supervision. 2. Document imaging will go live in Montefiore in May of this year. All inpatient records will be scanned in, as well as clinic notes from the Montefiore DTC clinics. All providers will have access to these documents from your desktop computer. In the near future, ER notes will also be available through this system. PEOPLE ARRIVING AND DEPARTING Here is a message from Mari Hinrichs, who had to leave the PCare Department to pursue her dream of having a family.... "The last 4+ years have been both challenging and rewarding. I have enjoyed working with each of you. Because of family obligations I have decided to work evenings at the Einstein Emergency Room beginning Feb 27. This will give me the opportunity to be home with our daughter and help our Russian son adjust once we get him home. Most of you don't know that our adoption has been stalled because of changes in Russian laws pertaining to international adoptions. We don't know when we will get a court date, but we hope it will be before his first birthday in April. This has been a long and arduous process and being able to be home with him during the day will be a blessing. Thanks to all of you for your support and kindness through my time here in PCare. I look forward to "bumping" into you at Einstein. My hours are MONDAY- THURSDAY 5-10 PM and Sundays 3-11pm" SCHEDULE HIGHLIGHTS March 18, 2005 From the Department of Health: Join us as the NYS Department of Health, in conjunction with SUNY Albany; present Initiatives for Healthy Infrastructure (iHi) Symposium 2005. Luz Towns-Miranda will be honored by the Coalition for Hispanic Family Services on March 30, 2005 at Tavern on the Green with an Orgullo de la Comunidad award, for her 15 years of service and commitment in providing care to a multitude of foster care children. On December 2, 2004, Luz Towns-Miranda along with her husband Luis A. Miranda was honored by the Community Association of Progressive Dominicans at the Audubon Ballroom for their 20 years of service and commitment in the Washington Heights community. Luz was singled out for her crucial role in implementing the three mental health programs that have flourished at the agency and provided much needed services to an underserved population. MISCELLANEOUS As you know, last year we experienced a series of unfortunate events which necessitated intensified security activities for our building and also spurred the hospital administration to work closely with the police around our neighborhood. In the Jan 29-Feb 9 issue of the Norwood News an article talked about the success police have had in decreasing the shootings in the 52nd precinct. At the end of the article, it states that the precinct will be getting an infusion of new cops which will 2 allow the police precinct's commander to deploy his evening tracer team of one sergeant and four officers to problem blocks in the northern part of the precinct, such as Rochambeau and DeKalb avenues and Knox and Gates places in Norwood. These are the blocks behind us. Hopefully we had something to do with the commander prioritizing these areas.
