CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES Indian Restaurant Club Dinner anyone? Our last dinner of the year took place at Bengal Tiger in White Plains. The group is working on a review of the restaurants we visited for the next newsletter. While all the meals were good, the company was excellent. Sadly the majority of the resident members for these expeditions will be graduating this year. If anyone is interested in continuing this tradition next year, please speak with Dr. Williams. Vegetarian restaurants, perhaps? For more information contact Sheena Kumar at (917) 2190163. To Dr. David Appel designated one of New York Magazine’s most “Influentials” of 2006! The article may be found online at http://www.nymag.com/news/features/influentials/16925/. Dr. Appel has been one of the most visible faces and audible voices advocating for children’s access to quality, comprehensive primary care and mental health services in school-based settings. His recognition is well deserved. Congratulations! To Yinghua Liu, one of our research partners in the Diabetes Collaboratives, on completing his 2nd master's degree -an M.P.A. from the NYU Wagner School. His first was a Master's in Sociology from the University of Beijing. Congratulations! To Barbara Sanders, MD, who on behalf of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center was congratulated on May 22, 2006 by Dean Dominick P. Purpura for her valuable work and contributions as Coordinator of the Family Medicine Subinternship clerkship. Dr. Peter Sherman coordinated a 3-day mini-course for the May Pediatric Academic Society meeting in San Francisco titled Underserved Populations Research Mini Course. Presenters included Dr. Iman Sharif. Given the unmet health needs of underserved children it is important that physicians be provided with the skills needed to engage in research in this arena. This mini-course provided a framework for inspiring clinicians to do research with underserved children as well as teach pertinent skills. MISCELLANEOUS You can access a complete list of MonteTalk E-Bulletins click here: http://intranet/newsevents/montetalk In April the Palliative Medicine Review Committee granted accreditation to DFSM's Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship. Francine Rainone, the Program Director, worked closely with Alice Fornari to ensure compliance with the Voluntary Program Standards for Residency Education in Palliative Medicine. Kim Eady deserves special credit for handling the enormous volume of paper work required. In September the American Board of Medical Specialties and the American Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) 3 are very likely to recognize Palliative Medicine as a specialty. With accreditation, we are well positioned to continue shaping the future of this exciting field.
