SKILL CHECKLIST FOR CENTRAL INTRAVENOUS DRESSING CHANGE
(*Under direct supervision of RN)
STEPS FOR PROCEDURE
1. Check date and time of last dressing change
2. Wash your hands
3. Assemble supplies
4. Check clients identification
5. Explain procedure to client
6. Clean overbed table and allow to dry
7. Place client in supine position, with head turned away from site
8. Put on face mask and also on patient if necessary
9. Set up supplies on overbed table
10. Put on clean gloves and remove old dressing
11. Dispose of dressing in plastic bag
12. Remove gloves and wash hands
13. Inspect site carefully
14. Don sterile gloves
15. Cleanse area with antiseptic solution, moving in a spiral direction
16. Allow antiseptic solution to dry
17. Apply new dressing
18. Secure tubing
19. Remove gloves and mask
20. Label dressing with date and time
21. Reposition client for comfort
22. Dispose of packages and wastes
23. Wash your hands
24. Assure proper IV flow rate
