To examine a number of different genres. To gain skills in critical reading and thinking of both fiction, non-fiction, and poetry through the lens of literary analysis and critical reading strategies. To enhance literary understanding, appreciation, and analysis through reading, discussion, tests, and writing assignments. 3 Ring binder (or designated tab) College ruled binder paper Highlighters Pens (blue/black) #2 Pencils Notebook (spiral or composition) Grading Policy: Assignments will be weighed accordingly in the grade-book: Quarter 1 = 45% Quarter 2 = 45% Final Exam = 10% Within each quarter: Listening and Speaking = 20% (presentations; discussions) Writing Process = 20% (pre-work; planning) Reading = 20% (quick writes; text-dependent questions; study guides) Language = 10% (daily work; vocabulary; grammar) Summative Work = 30% (tests; quizzes; final drafts) Independent Reading Overview: In addition to class novels, students will be responsible for parallel reading assignments. These assignments: Must be completed during non-instructional time. Must be read with the application of literary knowledge and strategies practiced in class. A zero will be given for any assignment on which a student cheated, copied, or plagiarized, or allowed another student to do so, and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken (detention, parent contact, and/or office referral). Late Work Policy *Due at the START of class for FULL credit. *10% drop up until 3:15 *Drops one letter grade (10%) for each day it is late to 50%.
