Course Objectives:
 To improve reading, writing, thinking, grammar, and
vocabulary skills.
 To examine a number of different genres.
 To gain skills in critical reading and thinking of both
fiction, non-fiction, and poetry through the lens of
literary analysis and critical reading strategies.
 To enhance literary understanding, appreciation, and
analysis through reading, discussion, tests, and writing
assignments.

Grading Policy:
Assignments will be weighed accordingly in the grade-book:
 Quarter 1 = 45%
 Quarter 2 = 45%
 Final Exam = 10%
Within each quarter:
 Listening and Speaking = 20% (presentations; discussions)
 Writing Process = 20% (pre-work; planning)
 Reading = 20% (quick writes; text-dependent questions; study guides)
 Language = 10% (daily work; vocabulary; grammar)
 Summative Work = 30% (tests; quizzes; final drafts)
Independent Reading Overview:
In addition to class novels, students will be responsible for parallel reading
assignments. These assignments:
 Must be completed during non-instructional time.
 Must be read with the application of literary knowledge and strategies
practiced in class.
 Will be assessed through writing assignments, discussion, quizzes, etc.
Classroom Expectations:
1. COURAGE. Have the courage to stand out. Have the courage to stand up for what
you believe. Have the courage to try: don’t be afraid to make mistakes; that is how we
learn.
2. RESPECT. Respect yourself, your surroundings, and others’ views and opinions.
3. INFLUENCE. Be aware of your influence on others & make it a positive one. Be
aware of others’ influence on you.
4. INTEGRITY. Speak with integrity. Be impeccable with your word. Say only
what you mean. Avoid speaking against yourself or gossiping about others. Be honest
in your work.
a. Honesty is expected at all times; honesty in explanations, honesty regarding homework (there is
a difference between working together and copying), and honesty on quizzes and tests.
b. A zero will be given for any assignment on which a student cheated, copied, or plagiarized, or allowed
another student to do so, and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken (detention, parent contact,
and/or office referral).
Late Work Policy
*Due at the START of class for
FULL credit.
*10% drop up until 3:15
*Drops one letter grade (10%)
for each day it is late to 50%.
