HF/Oil Fiber Tip Etching Process:
Setup:
The 49% HF will be poured into a small polypropylene container onto which I
will add a thin film of baby oil. The fibers will be mounted on an aluminum block with
small slots cut in the side to facilitate vertical alignment of the fibers and the block will
be set over the HF container such that the tips of the fiber are submerged by ~1mm.
Etching:
The etching is projected to take from ~0.5-2hr during which time the setup will
not be disturbed or modified. Etching will finish with the typical 5min DI rinse.
Disposal and Cleanup:
The HF will be disposed of down the HF drain or in a marked bottle along with
the oil. The container will be rinsed 3 times with DI as normal and then cleaned with
either a piranha bath in a larger container.
