Contamination of land on Earth 1. caused by toxic chemicals and waste 2. trash is left or dumped onto land 3. misusage of soil a. damaging agricultural practices b. mineral exploitation c. industrial waste dumping d. indiscriminate disposal of urban waste B. All types of waste can be found on land 1. some wash ashore from boats and sewage outlets 2. some is from human activities C. Consists of visible waste and litter D. Can pollute the air and water II. Where Does Land Pollution Come From? A. Mainly from human activities 1. chemical plants 2. coal-fired power plants 3. oil refineries 4. nuclear waste disposal activity 5. animal farms 6. metals production factories 7. plastic factories 8. other industry B. Landfills contain many chemicals that enter the soil C. People throw away more and there is an increase in the quality of solid waste D. Waste is left in certain areas by the government as dumping grounds E. Acid Rain pollutes land 1. Acid rain is a form of precipitation that contains high levels of sulfuric or nitric acids 2. Acid rain can contaminate drinking water, erode buildings and monuments, and damage vegetation and aquatic life 3. Causes of acid rain: automobile exhaust, industrial fuels, volcanic gas, and forest fires III. Two Types of Land Pollution A. Solid Waste- solid matter made by mankind or animal activities 1. Types of Solid Waste: a. Agriculture waste: crop, animal manure, or farm remains b. Mining waste: coal and ash remains c. Industrial waste: paint, chemical, petroleum, and metal wastes d. Sewage waste: sludge wastes e. Non-biodegradable waste: paper, plastic, used cans, electronic goods, metal, cloth, wood, etc. B. Soil Pollution- caused by chemicals in pesticides and herbicides 1. Causes of Soil Pollution: a. Poor soil management b. Harmful irrigation methods c. Manure build up d. Diesel oil spills IV. Effects of Land Pollution A. Health problems from toxic chemicals 1. deformities and birth defects 2. different types of cancer B. Ground water becomes polluted and is unsafe to drink 1. can cause health problems C. Nearby animals 1. can get caught in waste and possibly die from it in things such as plastics and oil 2. ecosystems are contaminated 3. unsafe and polluted drinking water or food source D. Agriculture 1. polluted soil is unreliable for growing plants 2. not safe for humans or animals to eat E. Dirty, unhealthy living areas can attract household pests V. Solutions to Stopping Land Pollution A. Use the 3 R's: Reuse, Reduce, Recycle 1. help clean up your environment such as parks and roads 2. Dispose of waste correctly 3. Cut down on waste thrown away 4. Separate household waste to recycle such as glass, paper, and plastic a. recycled items can be made into many things like bridges, cars, park benches, etc. B. Be aware of the dangerous affects of littering C. Dispose of organic material away from housing areas VI. What is our future if nothing is done? A. Unreliable soil 1. lack of plant life and possibly animal life 2. less agricultural produce B. Unsafe Drinking Water 1. affects all life negatively a. all organisms need water to survive 2. health issues will occur C. No space 1. landfills and waste dumps will increase in size 2. landfills and waste dumps will take up land space for humans and wildlife D. Health Problems References Unknown Author. (2000-2009).
