COURTS PAPER ASSIGNMENT
Directions: We will be watching a movie that mainly deals with the court system and the trial process.
The movie is called 12 Angry Men which focuses on how jury deliberation was able to grant a man his
innocence. Your assignment will be to take notes as you watch the movie, then you will write a paper
using the movie and an actual court case which will count as your 2nd test grade of the quarter. The
notes you take will also count towards your paper grade.
Task: After watching the movie, you will use your movie notes, what you have learned so far, and
research an actual case to write a 2 page paper based on the following quote:
"Justice is open to everyone in the same way as the Ritz Hotel." - Judge Sturgess (1928)
What to focus on in your paper:












Start with a well thought out introduction paragraph in which your interpret the quote in your
own words and explain if the movie and case your found prove or disprove it
Body paragraph on 12 Angry Men should focus on how jury deliberation was able to grant a man
his innocence
Body paragraph on an actual case where it looked like the defendant was going to be guilty but
evidence and witnesses were used to find them innocent
o Examples – O.J. Simpson, Casey Anthony, George Zimmerman, Fruitvale Station
o You are not to use your own bias towards what happened in these cases.
o You must use facts and evidence from the case that helped prove innocence.
Conclusion paragraph tying the movie and actual case to the quote
Use facts and information from your class notes
Make specific references to the movie and cases
Cite all of your sources in APA format and include a works cited page
o Wikipedia may NOT be used
The paper should have a cover page, be double-spaced, in Times New Roman, size 12 font
Cover page and works cited page do not count towards your 2 required pages of writing
Spelling and grammar will be checked
Attach a copy of your movie notes to your paper (counts as 10pts of grade)
The paper will count as a test grade (out of 100)
