We will begin a Plant Unit in March. In math we are beginning use of arrays as a foundation for multiplication. 3rd Grade- is studying about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. In writing we are working on four picture story frames. & Early Release @ 11:45 Science we will be discovering the reflection of light. In math we will be working on number sense and comparing numbers. Tuesday, Parents are welcome to come watch the events and help PTO February 25th, all of the third grade will be attending Peter and the Wolf at the Mesa Performing Arts Center. with event stations. Track/Field Day- March 12th Book Fair- Feb 25- March 6 Room 41/42 Spring Break- no school March 17-21 AIMS and Stanford 10 testing April 7-11 Grades 2-6 Please do not schedule any family appointments during this week if at all possible. Make up testing is required of all students and creates the chance to have to complete multiple tests in a single day. 4th Grade- will continue to work diligently in all academic areas. Math lessons include the areas of probability, elapsed time, and multiplying a whole number by a fraction. Language Arts lessons have recently covered non-fiction comprehension, and informational text. The unit of study in Science we are working on is Electricity and Magnetism. In Social Studies, students are beginning Chapter 6 in our textbook, "Conflict of Cultures". 5th Grade-Fifth graders have been busy! Students are reading Island of the Blue Dolphins and learning about the Revolutionary War. In addition, they are sharpening their writing skills. Writing topics have included: Who or what deserves to be on a US postage stamp and why?, compare and contrast two of your favorite candy bars, and letter writing. Students will be starting on their state projects soon! 6th Grade- This week 6th grade has been working on coordinate grids as a way to solve for area, perimeter, distances on a map, and identifying polygons. Next week, we will begin solving algebraic single-step and multi-step equations. What is happening with our Media, Music, Fine Arts & Sports Programs Music-Sixth grade is working on a composition project in music. Each student is writing a melody. They will write an accompaniment to go with their melody next. The final project will be to make sound effects to go with a short cartoon. The melody and accompaniment will be the beginning or the ending of the cartoon. These will be performed for the class. Orchestra- students are beginning to memorize music for their upcoming concert on May 8th. Concert time will be 6pm due to baseball season affecting many of our players! A big THANK YOU to parents for continuing to sign student practice records that represent their many minutes of practice at home! Please encourage your child to perform for you, which is the ultimate reward of learning how to play! Edison eagles are the best! Orchestra, "I love it!" Mrs. Alston Art Students in 4th-6th grade will be working on these skills/projects during art. 4th grade------ We just wrapped up a lesson that focused on warm, cool, and neutral colors. We will be expanding our knowledge to include primary and secondary colors. 5th grade-----We are continuing our study of symmetrical balance. We will finish cutting out our symmetrical bird masks. Then, we will discover how to use oil pastels to create a balanced and feathery texture. 6th grade---- We are drawing portraits of an Egyptian pharaohs. Students will enjoy using a drawing trick to help them create the realistic and symmetrically balanced facial features. Art club-------It's an exciting time as our paper sculpture houses begin to take shape. Once the houses are built, we will begin to create our yards with all of the "fixings" using a variety of paper sculpture techniques. Media Center- In the library we’re gearing up for our Fiesta Book Fair! We watched a preview on of some books that will be for sale in the book fair. In grades K-4 we also worked on language skills. In grades 5-6, we learned about U.S. Presidents. In celebration of Read Across America week, all grades will be learning about Dr. Seuss. PE- is gearing up for Track and Field Day- March 12th come out and see your kiddos compete. PTO Reading Night Join us to kick off Read Across America Week at Edison Elementary’s Family Reading Night Monday, March 3rd from 6:00-7:30 pm Meet in the cafeteria (the first 40 students will receive a door prize) where we will have 3 reading activities and then visit the Book Fair in the portable. Don’t miss our special guest in the library for stories, songs, and activities! There will be refreshments and a book for each student to take home at the end of the evening.
