Dear Future Scientist, Welcome to science. Below you will find information that will help you get the school year off to a great start. After reading, please sign and date the statement of awareness sheet indicating that you understand the policies and procedures required in science class this year. Materials You must have your science notebook and a pencil at school every day (see me for a supply list if you did not receive one). This is a requirement for earning participation points each day. In addition, you must keep your planner with you at all times. The planner is used primarily as an organizational tool, but also as a hall pass for restroom breaks and more. Bringing your materials is essential to success in class (and in life!). Classroom Expectations I would like to take the opportunity to review my classroom expectations so this will be a rewarding school year for all of us. Expectations Show respect for everyone and everything at all times. Follow all safety rules at all times. Consequences for making poor choices Reminder of the rules Student/Teacher Conference Parent/Teacher Conference Loss of lab privileges Meeting the above expectations is not only important for the physical safety of all students, it is also necessary to ensure a pleasant, productive learning environment for everyone. Classwork Science lab notebooks will be collected at regular intervals throughout the year. The notebook will typically be graded the same day and returned the following school day. A notebook can be collected at any time (with or without warning). Ensure your notebook stays up-to-date! Late notebooks will not be accepted except in the case of an absence. As with all coursework, students will have the number of days they were absent to make up the work. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for make-up work after an absence. Other classroom assignments may be turned in late, but will lose 10% of the grade for each late day. Homework It is my intention to avoid homework in science this year. Homework may be assigned if a class falls behind, if a student does not complete classwork during the class period, or if a student needs time at home to work on a project or study for a test. Using time wisely during class can help to alleviate your homework load. However, homework will be treated like classwork in that late work will lose 10% each day. Falling behind can become incredibly stressful. Work each day to ensure you are completing all assignments. Grades Your science grade will reflect the achievements you have made through general participation and preparation, lab performance and lab books, assessments, and projects. The overall percentage will determine your letter grade. Grades will be rounded to the nearest whole number. 90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D <60 = F By following the rules and procedures above, we can ensure we will have a fantastic year. Please sign the sheet entitled “Classroom Awareness”. By signing, you are acknowledging your awareness and acceptance to abide by these policies in this classroom at all times. Let’s get this year started! Mrs. Hayward
