BEETHOVEN: MASS IN C – bar numbers in ‘Old’ Novello score
This list refers to the score entitled ‘accompaniment revised by Berthold Tours’, which is the
edition we have borrowed for this performance. The comments occasionally refer to the much
more recent New Novello Edition, ed. Pilkington, which is broadly compatible with the one I
have dubbed ‘Old’ Novello. Notes about the Henle urtext edition are for my own reference.
Comments in Times New Roman are for the choir; those in italics for the soloists.
I have adopted the convention 11 to indicate bar 1 beat 1.
Where a bar number coincides exactly with a rehearsal letter or tempo change I’ve added this to
assist orientation.
