Review of Minutes – October 14, 2009 (Attachment)
The minutes of the October 14, 2009 meeting were approved by consensus.

Discussion Items

Course Outline Review Cycle – John Niss will lead a discussion about a process for
implementing the next cycle of review and revision for course outlines. This will include a
discussion of how the General Education component should be addressed.
John told the Committee that any outline that is two years old or older is due for the twoyear cycle review. This process will be done departmentally; as an example, John said that
the Math Department has already met and reviewed all math outlines as a group. A subcommittee was appointed to work on those outlines needing revisions, and they plan on
presenting the outlines for approval at the February 10, 2010 Curriculum Committee
meeting.
Karen added that, if all goes as planned, COB 3.5 should be back online by end-of-month.
This will help with the review, since the General Education feature will be enabled. She said
that a report of all outlines due for the review had already been sent to the deans, and she
asked Kim Adams to send the report again, including the CCC in the distribution.
John suggested that since this is a large undertaking, perhaps on the first pass only those
outlines for courses that are part of General Education could be reviewed.

Consent Agenda – Course modifications or deletions involving minor editing of course
descriptions or level changes which do not impact other departments are eligible for placement
on the consent agenda. Any members of the committee may request to remove a proposal
from the consent agenda for the purpose of discussion.

Cyber Security Fundamentals, CCA ........................ Angel Melendez
Purpose: This course is being temporarily added as an elective; however, it will be listed later
as one of the core courses under the (new) Cyber Security and Digital Forensics track; Catalog
Course Description: Students will learn how modern computer operating systems are used for
network security and digital forensic applications. Students will gain valuable experience
through many hands-on experiments. This course involves a laboratory learning environment.
(Special Fee: $20.00); Prerequisites: CET 2486C, Local Area Networks; Co-requisites: None;
Credit/Class/Lab Hours: 3/2/1; Effective Date: Spring 2010 (201020).
0910-006 CET 2890C
Network Security, CCA ............................................... Wael Yousif
Purpose: This course is being temporarily added as an elective; however, it will be listed later
as one of the core courses under the (new) Cyber Security and Digital Forensics track; Catalog
Course Description: The overarching purpose of this course is to provide information about the
basic workings of firewalls, with a predominant slant toward open-source, Linux-based firewalls
such as IPTABLES, and Firewall Snort. However, the course will also provide information and
practical knowledge on commercial firewalls. To that effect, smaller appliance firewalls such as
Linksys Firewall will be covered, along with personal firewalls such as Windows Firewall.
Additionally commercial enterprise firewalls such as Cisco PIX will be covered. Software
firewalls, integrated firewalls, and appliance firewalls will all be explored and explained. While
it is true that vendors’ firewall products vary greatly, the fundamental underlying principles do
not vary because of the nature of the technology, and therefore will constitute the focal point
of the course; Prerequisites: CET 2660C, Cyber Security Fundamentals; Co-requisites: None;
Credit/Class/Lab Hours: 4/2/2; Effective Date: Spring 2010 (201020).
Proposals 0910-005 and 0910-006 were tabled until Falecia Williams, AVP for Workforce
Development, and the appropriate deans could be notified of issues brought up regarding
these new course proposals. In addition, a broader group consisting of related-discipline
faculty will be brought in on the discussions.
At this point, a motion was made to move past 0910-007, and address 0910-008 and 0910009, since they have an impact on 0910-007’s Credit Program Modification request. It was
agreed upon to do this.
0910-008 EET 1214C
Introduction to Engineering Technology, CCM ........ Nasser Hedayat
Purpose: To adequately prepare students for EET 10306C and EET 1221C; Revised
Credit/Class/Lab Hours: 3/1/2 (previously 2/2/0); Effective Date: Fall 2010 (201110).

There was some discussion regarding 0910-008; not everyone was sure of the need to make a
change in the credit hours, feeling that there may be other ways of handling changes in the
course. In the end, a vote was taken to be sure that the majority were in agreement to
approve the modification. The vote was: 12-yes; 3-no; 1-abstain.
0910-009 EET 1036C
Fundamentals of DC and AC Circuits, CCM .............. Nasser Hedayat
Purpose: By increasing the credit hours of EET 1214C (a required prerequisite) from 2 to 3,
students are better prepared with hands-on equipment upon entering EET 10306C; Revised
Credit/Class/Lab Hours: 5/3/2 (previously 6/4/2); Effective Date: Fall 2010 (201110).

Computer Engineering Technology (Networking) with Specializations in Cisco
and Microsoft, A.S. Degree, CPM

Purpose: (1) To increase EET 1214C required credit hours to 3; (2) To change the required
degree elective hours from 7 to 6 for CISCO and Microsoft specializations; (3) To remove EET
2330 from the degree electives listing; (4) To add CET 2660C and CET 2890C to degree electives
listing; Effective Date: Fall 2010 (201110).
Proposal 0910-007 was approved with a modification – to remove item #4 from the areas to
be modified on the CPM form, since the two courses referenced (CET 2660C and CET 2890C)
were tabled pending further discussion within the departments of IT and Electrical
Engineering Technology.
0910-010 Microcomputer Repairer/Installer, Technical Cert., CPM ............... Nasser Hedayat
Purpose: (1) To increase EET 1214C required credit hours to 3; (2) To change the required
degree elective hours from 4 to 3; Effective Date: Fall 2010 (201110).
0910-011 Electronics Engineering Technology, A.S. Degree, CPM .................. Nasser Hedayat
Purpose: To adjust the credit hours for EET 1214C (from 2 to 3); and EET 1036C (from 6 to 5).
This adjustment will better prepare students for entrance into EET 1036C, as well as other
courses within the program; Effective Date: Fall 2010 (201110).

Wine Essentials, CCA ........................................ Scott Richardson
Purpose: To prepare Valencia hospitality and culinary students and other members of the
Valencia community to understand the impact of the wine industry globally. Secondary reason
is to give a framework for those students who will be progressing into further education in the
beverage industry; Catalog Course Description: A survey of the renowned old and new world
wine regions, their evolution in western culture, and their role in contemporary society. Grape
varieties and celebrated vineyards, classification systems, international trends in wine
consumption and restaurant marketing, along with the influence of media on wine
consumption will be studied. Hospitality and Culinary students will be given preference in
enrolling in this course. Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of enrollment.
Professional wine tasting protocol requires that all students taste the wine and spit. (Special
Fee: $50.00); Prerequisites: HFT 1000, FSS 2251, and department approval; Co-requisites:
None; Credit/Class/Lab Hours: 3/3/0; Effective Date: Spring 2010 (201020).

Purpose: Change the course number and revise course description to be consistent with

archaeologists use to study human culture from the world’s earliest societies to the present;

Purpose: With the addition of a college wide final exit exam for MAT 0012, faculty feel a need
for a method of remediation for students who have done will in the class, but failed to pass the
exam; Catalog Course Description: This course is for students who successfully completed the
course work for MAT 0012C with a grade of B or higher, but failed the final exit exam with a
score of 22 or 23. Students may be eligible for this course the semester following their first
attempt in MAT 0012C. Students will work intensively on specific math competencies assigned
based on the students’ previous performance. Upon successful work in this course, students
will be eligible for one attempt at the state competency exam. (Special Fee: $35.00);

0910-019 MAT 0024N Intensive Mathematics Tutorial, CCM .............................. John Niss
Purpose: The current title is “Intensive Mathematics Tutorial,” which is confusing now that
there is also an “Intensive Pre-Algebra Tutorial. The request is to change the course title to
“Intensive Beginning Algebra Tutorial;” Revised Catalog Course Description: This course is for
students who successfully completed the course work for MAT 0024C or MAT 0020C with a
grade of B or higher, but failed the state-mandated competency exam with a score of 22 or 23.
Students may be eligible for this course the semester following their first attempt in MAT 0024C
or MAT 0020C. Students will work intensively on specific math competencies assigned based
on the students’ previous performance. Upon successful work in this course, students will be
eligible for one attempt at the state competency exam. (Special Fee: $35.00); Revised
Prerequisites: Completion of MAT 0020C or MAT 0024C with a grade of I; department approval
(previously, MAT 0024C or MAT 0020C); Effective Date: Fall 2010 (201110).

Information Items
SLS Course Oversight – Going forward, all SLS courses will be placed under the new SLS
Director, Catherine Penfold-Navarro. This includes SLS 2940 and SLS 1303, which were
previously under Barbara Frazier and Joe Lynn Look, respectively.
In addressing this informational item, Karen said that the SLS voter lists will be changing, as
well.
Academic Advisor for the CCC – Due to scheduling conflicts, the CCC will be unable to move
forward with the placement of an Academic Advisor from Student Services as an ex-officio
member.
The next meeting of the College Curriculum Committee is scheduled for January 13, 2010, and will
be held on the East Campus, Room 3-113. Deadline for submission of materials for the January
agenda is December 9, 2009.
