Strategic Planning Goal 4.3 and 4.4 Community Engagement Goal Team Meeting Summary December 4, 2009 Attending: Ron Oliver, Bill Booth, Lucy Boudet, Amy Bosley, Carmen Diaz, Susan Stone, Nicole Valentino, LeSena Jones, Tyron Johnson, Barbara Frazier (Convener) Five Questions we are to tackle: Where do we want to ultimately go? What part can we “bite off” within the next three years? What are we currently doing? What measures can we use to help identify progress? Will the initiatives more the needle? If not what what’s missing from the list? Responding to #3 Carmen Diaz and Ron Oliver, our Seekers , identified different department s where we are currently involved in community engagement. (See Handout: “Strategic Team: Partner with Community.”) There was discussion about Student Development and capturing their role in community engagement in our review. Also discussed was a possible need to better improve communications and procedures within Student Development to facilitate faculty/student/community engagement. We need to be sure to include Economic Development initiatives as part of what Valencia is currently doing. Amy Bosley noted those programs/plans are indeed reflected in other documentation. We need to capture all the efforts that are undertaken by academic programs that connect with the community such as the Allied Health programs’ involvement with the Banner Center, Blood Bank visits, clinicals, etc. These need to be captured under an umbrella term and not individually identified. Amy Bosley explained that our audit of what Valencia currently has going on need not be exhaustive. We should focus on new initiatives or improvements. Goal 4 is a means to support the 1st and 2nd Goals. Ty Johnson discussed the College’s new goals to increase international students as an example of areas that benefit from community engagement. Strong engagement with local companies can help in recruiting prospective international students to Valencia with the offer of local jobs. Where are Valencia staff member serving on local boards? Where are people serving in community initiatives? -more- Page 2, Goal Team Team Principles and Goals: When we met Nov. 10, we discussed Principles for our team. Barbara Frazier reiterated those principles. (See Handout.) We agreed to add the following principle: “Recognize that our successful engagement is based on understanding community needs and also learning how federal, state and private initiatives may help fund the achievement of common community, societal and College goals.” Responding to Our Community: “What are our community priorities?” asked Susan Stone. “First thing we do in nursing is assess”. Lucy Boudet mentioned that The Orlando Sentinel publishes a list in January of issues they believe are most important to the community. President Obama’s new federal legislation impacting our College and Higher Education should be reviewed. Central Florida Partnership. Bill Booth discussed this group as an organization that prioritizes goals for a region. We are members. How could we use Learning Day to educate faculty and staff about community engagement and facilitate more of it? How do/can we use our retired faculty and staff to tell the Valencia story in the community and/or engage with the community in research, teaching and service? Measurable Goals: Increased donations. Increased enrollment Increased grant funding. Increased workforce/corporate involvement. Increased corporate relocations to Central Florida. Increased community service by faculty/staff. What do we need to know in order to measure? How many of our graduates are in leadership roles in our community? How many of the top 100 companies donate to Valencia or are involved in training programs or instruction, internship programs, etc.? What attracts students to Valencia? What data exists already about faculty/staff engagement? What is the community’s awareness of Valencia mission and services currently and its perception of Valencia. -more- Page 3, Goal Team What are our next steps? 1.
