Welcome and Introductions
Susan Ledlow welcomed Council members and called meeting to order.
Minutes of October 25, 2012 Meeting
Susan asked the Council to review the minutes from the October 25 meeting sent via email
and provide feedback. Approval of the minutes will be held at the next Council meeting.
Faculty Co-Chair for College Planning Council
The search for the Faculty Co-chair to the College Planning Council is still on-going. Jean
Marie Führman and Rob McCaffrey will send a reminder to the Faculty and will report
status by next meeting.
Financial Report
Keith Houck gave an overview of the current financial reports. Enrollment was down 2.5%
in the Fall Term, and the budgets were adjusted accordingly. The Spring Term enrollment
is currently down 8% compared to last year. However, the college is still financially stable.
Budgets are being analyzed in preparation for the FRS court* ruling. The Finance office is
working to identify where retirement funds should come from if the ruling is in favor of
returning employee contributions.
*The Florida Supreme Court subsequently ruled in favor of upholding the pension fee.
Achieving the Dream Update
Kurt Ewen presented the Council and Achieving the Dream coaches Byron McClenney and
Ted Wright with an update on the Strategic Indicators report. The purpose of the analysis
was to gain a better understanding on how this data will affect the upcoming Strategic Plan
development.
Kurt also emphasized the importance of integrating assessment, evaluation, and reflection
in the entire strategic planning process, and how this will ultimately benefit the college in
1
building strategies. Now that college-wide planning is moving to a decentralized model, the
current challenge is to identify items that are the same between campuses, and decide how
long we can continue to assess different areas between campuses until they become
similar.
Learning Activities
Susan discussed the importance of the Learning Activities during each CPC meeting. The
Council was reminded that these short activities will allow the Council to share ideas that
are of interest to improving the work of the college.
As part of the strategic goal of improving student writing, Susan talked about the idea of
writing-to-learn. The WAC Clearinghouse defines this pedagogical approach as “…informal
writing tasks that help students think through key concepts or ideas presented in a course.”
Also known as “writing across the curriculum,” these writing activities help students focus
their thinking into short succinct products. Susan suggested the Council review the
following helpful links:
 The WAC Clearinghouse: http://wac.colostate.edu/intro/pop2d.cfm
 OWL: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/owlprint/671/
Noelia Maldonado asked Council members to volunteer to present at subsequent CPC
meetings. The upcoming presenters are:

Joyce Romano – March 28, 2013
Amy Kleeman – April 25, 2013
Debora Simko – September 26, 2013 (tentative)
Faculty Council Update
Rob McCaffrey provided an update on plans for the post-tenured Faculty annual reviews. A
survey has been sent out to various members of the college for feedback. Results will be
shared at the next Council meeting.
State Board of Education held a workshop for rule development on state rule with
contracts. Rob talked at length in regards to the tenure process, specifically on how
changing the rule would affect those currently enrolled in the process (i.e. change from a 3
year process to a 5 year process). There are very few supporters of the rule and it are not
anticipated that will change.
Next Meeting Date and Time
The next College Planning Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 28, 2012
at the Winter Park Campus, room 242.
