CLASS TITLE:
CUSTODIAL UTILITY WORKER
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of Custodial Supervisor or other assigned supervisor, maintain an assigned
group of classrooms, rest rooms, offices and related facilities in a clean and orderly manner;
perform a variety of semi-skilled to skilled general building maintenance work related to
electrical, plumbing, locksmithing, carpentry and painting; maintain facilities in a safe and secure
condition.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Organize and coordinate all campus cleaning including semester breaks; sweep, scrub,
mop, and wax floors; vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices,
workshops and other work areas; wash windows, chalkboards and walls; strip, wax and
buff floors. (E)
2.
Maintain and repair custodial equipment and perform semi-skilled maintenance duties to
include repair of projector screens, wallpaper, carts, file cabinets, paper towel
dispensers, holes in classroom walls and panic bar alarms. (E)
3.
Meet with administration, faculty and staff to plan and coordinate set-up and tear down
of facility for all special functions.
4.
Assure the proper supplies are stored to maintain campus; report supplies and parts that
need to be ordered and/or order supplies and parts as designated. (E)
5.
Organize and coordinate the relocation of college property for off-site non-credit
programs. Provide work direction to assigned substitute custodians and needed.
6.
Identify and report unusual problems or difficulties to superiors; perform semi-skilled
repairs to buildings and fixtures; replace fluorescent light tubes; clean and adjust shades
and blinds; adjust desks and other furniture. Make necessary repair to electrical
problems including replacement of ballasts, outlets and plugs. (E)
7.
Set, re-set and monitor security alarms system and respond to emergency situations
according to established procedures. Open and close classrooms as needed.
8.
Restock and maintain women's personal hygiene vending machines; collect and turn in
monies to lead custodian.
9.
Inspect and repair roof leaks; clear gutters and down spouts; install flashing, weather
stripping, gutters, down spouts and roof drains. (E)
10.
Maintain security of district facilities by maintaining lock system; install, repair or replace
locks, door closures, latches, hinges, and related hardware.
11.
Initiate purchase requisitions for parts, tools, supplies and equipment.

12.
Install, maintain, diagnose, repair and/or replace plumbing fixtures and flushing
mechanisms, water faucets, valves, drinking fountains, fittings and gaskets; utilize
appropriate tools to clean and clear clogged drains and obstructed sewer lines. (E)
13.
Reset and adjust building controls for automatic lighting and HVAC systems.
14.
Perform general painting, sand and repair wall, stucco, wall covering, mix paints and
apply wood finishes, stains and sealers.
15.
Perform related duties as assigned.

ABILITY TO:
Learn to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures and apply them in

Operate a variety of building trade equipment including power saws, hammers, generators,
compressors, router, meters, electrical drains, sewer cleaners, carpentry hand tools and
District vehicles.
Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately.
Meet schedules and timelines.
Read blueprints and building plans.
Use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to pre-determined standards.
Learn and apply knowledge of schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used
in custodial work
Maintain tools and equipment assigned in clean working order and provide proper security.
Perform minor semi-skilled repair.
Observe and report need for maintenance and repair.
Lift heavy objects.
Communicate effectively with others and interpret written and oral service requests.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Organize, schedule and prioritize without direct supervision.
Work as a member of a team.
Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural,
ethnic and disability issues.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and 2 years closely related
work experience
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver license; District-approved DMV driving record.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Not applicable.

Coworkers, college personnel and the public.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Moderate physical labor including frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects
weighing up to 75 pounds; frequent to constant standing, walking, bending, kneeling and
stooping while performing a variety of general maintenance work including minor equipment
repair/replacement, cleaning, moving furniture or equipment, etc.; repetitive use of upper
extremities on a regular basis; ability to operate electric cart to travel and/or to pick-up/deliver
supplies to a variety of locations on campus; subject to occasional travel to various District
locations to work.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and
communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups
of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to effectively work
alone or as a crew member; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks
concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in indoor environment with limited exposure to inclement weather during travel
to and from assigned work areas; work while wearing personal protection equipment; exposure
to fumes from commercial cleaning products and noise from vacuums and other cleaning
equipment; subject to frequent interruptions by individuals in person or by telephone,
intermittent exposure to individuals acting in a disagreeable manner; may be required to work at
any district location during day and/or evening hours including weekends on an as-needed
basis. Occasional local travel may be requested.
