CLASS TITLE:
FACILITY MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of Facilities Supervisor, oversee work of contract custodial service to ensure
classrooms, rest rooms, offices and related facilities are maintained in a clean and orderly
manner; perform a variety of semi-skilled to skilled general building maintenance work related to
electrical, plumbing, locksmithing, carpentry and painting; serve as Media Services liaison for
Community Learning Center.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Train student workers. Assign and provide work direction and guidance to student
workers and contract custodial service. Inspect work in progress and upon completion
ensure compliance with instructions and quality standards. (E)
2.
Interface with contractors and vendors as required.
3.
Troubleshoot and repair water leaks, broken glass, gas leaks, and fire hazards.(E)
4.
Serve as a liaison to Media Services in requesting needed audio/visual equipment and
reporting equipment in need of replacement. Repair audio/visual equipment including
changing lights in projectors and reconnecting VCRs and TVs.
5.
Meet with administration, faculty and staff to plan, organize and coordinate set-up and
tear down of facility for all special functions. Use campus online request system to
coordinate setup and work requests. Plan, organize and coordinate the relocation of
college property for off-site non-credit programs at the beginning of each semester. (E)
6.
Maintain and repair custodial equipment and perform semi-skilled maintenance duties to
include repair of various classroom and office equipment. (E)
7.
Order supplies and parts as necessary.
8.
Set, re-set and monitor security alarms system and respond to emergency situations
according to established procedures. Maintain security of district facilities by
establishing and maintaining lock system; install, repair or replace locks, door closures,
latches, hinges, and related hardware. (E)
9.
Restock and maintain women's personal hygiene vending machines; collect and turn in
monies to lead custodian. (E)
10.
Install, inspect and repair roofing and related components.
11.
Make necessary repair to electrical problems including replacement of ballasts, outlets
and plugs. Reset and adjust time clocks controlling automatic lighting, heating and air
conditioning. Replace smoke detectors as needed. (E)

Install, maintain, diagnose, repair and/or replace plumbing fixtures and flushing

mechanisms, water faucets, valves, drinking fountains, fittings and gaskets; utilize
appropriate tools to clean and clear clogged drains and obstructed sewer lines. (E)
13.
Perform general painting, sand and repair wall, stucco, wall covering, mix paints and
apply wood finishes, stains and sealers.
14.
Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and one year directly
related work experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver license; District-approved DMV driving record.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Contract custodial service, vendors, substitute custodians and student workers.
CONTACTS:
Vendors, contractors, faculty, staff, students, and the public.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Moderate to heavy physical labor including frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of
objects weighing up to 75 pounds; frequent to constant standing, walking, bending, kneeling and
stooping while performing a variety of general maintenance work including minor equipment
repair/replacement, cleaning, moving furniture or equipment, etc.; repetitive use of upper
extremities on a regular basis; ability to operate electric cart to travel and/or to pick-up/deliver
supplies to a variety of locations on campus; subject to occasional travel to various District
locations to work.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other individuals from diverse
backgrounds; ability to personally interact and communicate appropriately with students, staff
and/or faculty on a regular, on-going basis; ability to effectively work alone or as a crew member
on a variety of assigned tasks while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in indoor environment with limited exposure to inclement weather during travel
to and from assigned work areas; work at above ground locations such as ceilings and roofs
and in confined and/or awkwardly configured areas; work in poorly-lighted areas, and around
high voltage and electrical panels; work while using or wearing personal protection equipment
such as respirators, protective gloves, steel toed footwear, goggles, and rain suits; exposure to
dust, and pollen, and/or hazardous materials such as solvents and other toxic chemicals;
exposure to fumes from commercial cleaning products and noise from vacuums and other
cleaning equipment; must work with and around dangerous equipment and machinery with
moving parts; may be required to work at any District location during day and/or evening hours
including weekends on an as-needed basis.
