Discipline/School details [HTL] Science in the University of Tasmania In its broadest sense, ‘science’ means no more than ‘knowledge’ and may be applied to any discipline. It is perfectly legitimate, for example, to speak of the science of music or painting. Having said this, however, students should note that the term ‘science’ is generally employed by the University in relation to the study of natural phenomena: the universe, the earth, minerals, plants, and animal life. The faculties of Health Science and Science, Engineering and Technology are chiefly responsible for the teaching of such ‘sciences’. Some sciences (eg social science, psychology, geography and environmental science) cross the borders which otherwise stand between the ‘Arts’ or ‘Humanities’ on the one side and the ‘Sciences’ on the other and may be studied in such courses as the Bachelor of Arts. Yet other sciences (eg mathematics, and computer science) are indispensible to the study of economics and commerce. Indeed, there is another way in which science and business become partners, and that is in the application and commercialisation of technical innovation which results from scientific discoveries. Beginning in 2003, the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology is introducing a new unit KAA200 which may be studied as part of the Bachelor of Science degree course as well as other courses offered by the Faculty. ________________________________________ University of Tasmania Discipline/School details for academic year August 1, 2016, 19:08 PM, page –1
