DISCOVERING ABEL TASMAN Although Aboriginal people have lived in Tasmania for at least 35,000 years, Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, was the first European to “discover” Tasmania. LANDSCAPE Tasmania is known for its rugged, mountainous landscape, with nearly 40% of the state being protected wilderness or national parkland. HIGHEST PEAK MOUNT OSSA The state's highest peak is Mount Ossa, which stands at 1,617 meters tall. FAUNA ENDEMIC SPECIES Tasmania has a unique assemblage of Australian fauna, including the three largest extant marsupial predators - Tasmanian devil, Spotted-tailed quoll and Eastern quoll. CLIMATE TEMPERATURE Tasmania has a cool temperate climate, with mild summers and cold winters. CULTURE RICH HISTORY Tasmania has a vibrant arts and cultural scene, with festivals such as the Dark Mofo winter festival, the Tasmanian Craft Fair, and the Taste of Tasmania food festival attracting visitors from around the world. TOURISM Tourism is a significant contributor to the state's economy, generating over $3 billion in revenue annually. WORLD HERITAGE AREA At least one-fifth of Tasmania is a World Heritage Area. The area which covers 1.58 million hectares includes national parks, marine, and forests reserves.
