ADP Steering Committee Meeting 4/3/08, 3-4pm Nancy Soderberg began the meeting at 3:10. I. Announcements / Current Events Nancy Soderberg reported that she would like to either set up meetings soon with the University’s department chairs or attend their meetings, to help integrate ADP initiatives into campus life and gain student interest. Berrin Beasley noted that it would be helpful to speak with the chairs so that ADP programs could be integrated into Fall syllabi. UNF Voices Forum Martina Perry reported that the UNF Voices Forum that was held March 25 with guest panelists Jerry Holland and Kyle Scott was quite successful for a first attempt. She reported that the event was student-organized and there were approximately 50 in attendance. The student groups involved also provided refreshments which were an incentive for student attendance. There was discussion about coordinating with student groups to plan future events. Sunshine Week Public Records Panel: Friday April 18, 12-1:30pm, 15/1303 Berrin Beasley reported that Parvez Ahmed has coordinated to get three reputable panelists to attend: Joe Adams (Florida Times-Union, author); Barbara Petersen (President of the First Amendment Foundation in Tallahassee); JoAnn Carrin (Office of Open Government in Tallahassee). Each speaker will make a brief presentation and then there will be a Q&A time. Promotion o Will be e-mailed to all faculty, and go in Campus Update and Student Update. o Berrin Beasley has spoken to Matt with the Spinnaker and they indicated they are planning to cover the event. o Berrin Beasley stated that the local Jacksonville press should be notified due to the relevance of the topic and the significance of the speaker panel. o There was discussion about adding the panel discussion as a ‘hot button’ on the UNF mywings portal. Lucy Croft reported that there is a selection process and a request should be sent to Sharon Ashton. o Berrin Beasley reported that she made copies of the flier and put them in her department’s faculty mailboxes; she encouraged other committee members to do the same and to encourage participation among their colleagues. o Nancy Soderberg indicated that ‘yard sale’-style signs worked well for the promotion of the recent Madeleine Albright event. Lucy Croft reported that Club Alliance, an agency of SG, has yard sign frames available for student groups to check out. ADP Student Subcommittee Berrin Beasley suggested that a small student subcommittee of the ADP Steering Committee be formed to function as a recognized student entity, provide student input, and handle promotion and similar types of functions. She stated she felt that the ADP Committee is often making decisions about student interest without the benefit of their input; she felt this perspective would be beneficial. o Heather Patterson indicated that she felt it was too much to ask of one student to handle all of the student ADP functions that Mark Smith has been handling, and stated that it would be helpful to bring in others. o Lucy Croft suggested that David Jaffee email the students who are nominated to serve on the committee to make it somewhat of an honorable appointment. o There was further discussion about how to recruit student interest in participation of the student subcommittee. o Berrin Beasley suggested that each committee member identify 1-2 students within their department to nominate for the student committee so that there would be someone to provide perspective and direct contact for the students. o Nancy Soderberg recommended that we aim for the beginning of Fall to install the student subcommittee due to semester and SG changes. Meeting with Chairs / Departments to Discuss ADP Mission and Solicit Involvement There was discussion about creating incentives for faculty and for students to be involved with ADP events throughout the year. It was suggested that the committee target meetings with ADP-related departments: Political Science, Criminal Justice, History, Philosophy, Sociology and Communication. The committee divided the departments that would be visited: Berrin Beasley: Communication Lucy Croft: Criminal Justice Nancy Soderberg: Political Science and History David Jaffee: Sociology and Philosophy Beasley, Croft, Soderberg and Jaffee will coordinate to meet with these respective departments. Berrin Beasley and Nancy Soderberg will put together information packets for presenting to the departments/chairs. National Global Youth Service Day Martina Perry reported on behalf of Heather Burk. Supplies are being collected until April 25; there will be campus-wide events on April 25. II. Planning of Summer/Fall ADP Events Summer City Hall and Florida Times-Union Tours There was discussion about which dates would work best for these opportunities. City Hall Tour: Date established as May 27. Heather Patterson reported that the Jacksonville City Council will be electing their President and Vice-President on May 27 and it would be a good day for the City Hall tour. She suggested that Matt Corrigan try to coordinate for the students to meet with the mayor if possible. She reported that the tour is typically at 5:00 and suggested that some programming be planned from about 3-4:45 before the tour. It was decided that the tentative July date be cancelled as it is typically a vacation month for city council members and often for students. Florida Times-Union Tour: It was decided that David Jaffee will choose a date in Summer A and call the FLTU to set up a tour; Berrin Beasley will assist him in establishing a good tour date with the FLTU. Berrin Beasley will send her Summer A students to attend and David Jaffee will accompany the student group in the tour. It was decided that transportation would not be provided and that the group would meet up at the Times-Union. It was decided that there would not be a second Times-Union tour in Summer B. Chamber of Commerce Hob Nob: August 7th There was discussion about this event; it was decided that the ADP will not promote it since there are prior obligations on this date among committee members and they don’t anticipate broad student involvement. Fall Ideas o Ralph Sawyer expressed interest in initiating an issues forum/dialogue with a panel of 3-4 to facilitate and discuss 1-2 topics, and then open up the conversation for students/attendees to discuss the topics. o Harriet Stranahan will make a presentation in the Fall; Berrin Beasley reported that she will follow up to get details. o Berrin Beasley reported that John Parmelee agreed to do another presentation in the Fall focused on presidential candidate ads. He would like to choose a smaller venue. Berrin Beasley reported that she would follow up with John to get prospective dates. o Nancy Soderberg reported that John Zogby will be in Jacksonville on October 1314 with the World Affairs Council. She has made contacts to see if the ADP could secure him to come to campus. She suggested that it could be incorporated into Ralph Sawyer’s Issues Forum idea, or he could moderate some sort of event. o Lucy Croft suggested planning an opportunity that would present both perspectives on the election debates. She would like to use it as a kickoff to create buzz for a bigger debate/discussion event and get students interested in expressing their views on issues. Berrin Beasley stated that she liked the idea of hosting a debate party that would have discussion afterwards. o David Jaffee reported that the student groups who coordinated the UNF Voices Forum in March expressed intent on time limits for speakers and allowing time for Q&A and discussion; suggested that this be implemented in event planning since it seems to be important to the students. o Nancy Soderberg reported that Wes Clark will be coming to Jacksonville as a Democratic Party event; suggested that he could create a big draw among students. o David Jaffee reported that Marcia Ladendorff would like to coordinate an event focused on political ads in the fall; more information to follow. Berrin Beasley noted that Fall dates need to be confirmed as soon as possible so that those meeting with the chairs will have concrete events to report. Future Meetings There was discussion about meeting over the summer. It was decided that the group would meet once more on May 1 at 3:00 to confirm fall plans, and then coordinate through email during the summer afterwards. The meeting was adjourned at 4:00pm.
