ADP Steering Committee October 9, 2008 PRESENT: Ahmed, Arsenault, Croft, Jaffee, Mauro, Patterson, Perry, Soderberg Nancy Soderberg opened the meeting at 2:05pm. Minutes from the September 4 meeting were reviewed and approved. Review of September and October Events Members of the group reported on recent events: o Constitution Week SG participated in breakfast; debate was well-attended. o Women’s Center event, Cracks in the Glass Ceiling Lucy Croft reported success. o Academic Freedom debate, organized by UNF Voices David Jaffee reported high attendance and substantive conversation. o Capitol Steps Nancy Soderberg and Chris Arsenault reported that the event was sold out and excellent; table for distribution of ADP materials was not wellattended. o World Affairs Council Indyk event Nancy Soderberg reported high attendance. She promoted upcoming Zogby and Brooks events. o Face to Face with Senator Bob Graham Nancy Soderberg and David Jaffee reported success. o Project Vote Smart David Jaffee reported that while very visible, participation was passive and low. o John Parmelee’s presentation on candidate framing Martina Perry reported attendance of about 5. She suggested planning similar events on days other than Mondays in the future for better turnout. o Evoking Rights documentary Showings are ongoing each Wednesday through 11/15 o Visit from Lieutenant Governor Kottkamp, organized by College Republicans Chris Arsenault reported that the event was not well-organized or wellattended. ADP Involvement Among College Democrats and College Republicans There was discussion about the lack of involvement in the ADP by College Democrats and College Republicans. It was determined that David Jaffee would send representatives from both organizations notes formally inviting them to join. Chris Arsenault also said he would speak with the organizations’ reps, to see if there are other members who would be interested in coming to meetings if the leaders are unable. Upcoming Events o Jason Mauro offered information on the upcoming Flight from Death film screening event on October 15. o David Jaffee reported that he was trying to secure a second representative for an Amendment 2 debate during the week of October 20. He asked for recommendations from the group. o David Jaffee reported that UNF Voices were planning film screenings on October 24 and possibly November 21. He said their event originally scheduled for October 15 had been cancelled. o Heather Patterson and Matt Corrigan reported on the status of the October 27 presidential debate. They said they hadn’t received positive responses from their invitations to the national parties to send debate representatives, and had since contacted Senators Nelson and Martinez. The group brainstormed alternate debate panelist ideas in the event that the senators’ offices were unable to send representatives. Heather Patterson said she would follow up with the ADP committee when more information was known. o There was discussion about possibly coordinating an election night returns event. Heather Patterson and Chris Arsenault agreed to work with Housing and other appropriate parties to explore the possibility of coordinating this type of event. o Nancy Soderberg suggested that a post-election analysis event be coordinated for 1-2 weeks after the election. It was determined that Nancy Soderberg would work with Matt Corrigan to explore this possibility. Spring Planning o Nancy Soderberg reported on upcoming World Affairs Council Events. o Heather Burk reported that she would like students to coordinate a philanthropic student volunteer week in February or March. She said that National Global Youth Service Day, which has been successful in the past, falls during UNF’s finals week this year, so an alternative is being planned. o Lucy Croft and Parvez Ahmed suggested that a presidential economic and foreign policy event be coordinated for the Spring. It was determined that Parvez Ahmed would work with his CCB colleagues to coordinate this. o A first 100 days assessment was suggested. It was suggested that the significance of the first black president or first female vice-president be incorporated into the theme of this event. o Lucy Croft suggested inviting Luke Russert to speak to student groups. She said she would look into this possibility. o David Jaffee suggested that the ADP form a partnership with the JCCI to promote community engagement and student awareness of current community initiatives and issues. He said he would contact the JCCI to gather more information. o Heather Patterson suggested the coordination of a student bus trip to visit local schools, shelters or other areas of community need. o Parvez Ahmed suggested that a tour of local civic institutions be planned for Spring. Heather Patterson said that Dr. William Voorhees may be interested in having his students participate in this. o Chris Arsenault reported that Dr. David Schwam-Baird’s foreign policy discussions are a great opportunity for student involvement but are not wellattended. Nancy Soderberg said she would ask Dr. Schwam-Baird to send information about the sessions to Martina so that the ADP could help promote them. o It was determined that the Florida Times-Union tour will be kept as a Summer semester activity.
