Introductory comments
PLEASE CONFIRM details of the following course with the Faculty of Education
A one-semester full-time or two-semester part-time course offered at the Hobart campus
with video link to Launceston and the North-West Centre. The maximum time allowed for
completing the course is two years.
Admission & prerequisites
Educators who hold a 4-year trained teaching qualification or equivalent (eg initial degree
and a Diploma of Education or Bachelor of Teaching); or persons working in a related
professional field who hold a qualifcation deemed to be of equivalent standing. In special
cases, the Faculty may accept applicans who do not satisfy these requirements.
Applicants must be prepared to:
•
provide evidence of a minimum of three years of counselling or rleated practice in
the human service field;
•
include the names and contact details of 3 referees;
•
include a short statement outlining the nature of the counselling process and the
reasons for undertaking this program of study;
•
have a personal interveiw. The purpose of the interview is to provide applicants
with an opportunity to meet teaching staff in order to discuss and expandthe
preceding points;
•
•
supply an original police record check indicating that the application is of good
character. Where an applicant has lived outside Tasmania for more than 5 years, a
police record check is required from the relevant state or country;
attend a 2-day orientation at Hobart once acceptance into the program has been
notified.
Course objectives
Students who complete the course successfully should have:

a clear understanding of the social, cultural and developmental context in which
counselling occurs;

a clear understanding of a wide variety of therapeutic approaches approriate to a
range of client ages, needs and circumstances;
the ability to demonstrate a range of skills in relation to assessment, intervention,
evaluation, consultation and referral;
an advanced understanding of the ethical, legal and professional issues in relation to
the practice of counselling, and the need to make a contribution to the development
of the counselling profession within the community;

knowledge of approaches to research in counselling and be able to undertake
successfully supervised and independent projects within the community;
the ability to demonstrate an advanced level of personal and profesdsional
awareness in order to enhance their competence to counsel others.
Professional recognition
The program provides entry qualifications for the Professional Counselling Association of
Tasmania. It is anticipated that approval will be granted by State and National
professional associations. Details may be obtained from the Faculty of Education.
Articulation
Students who have completed awards in the former counselling and development stream
within the Faculty of Education and wish to transfer or upgrade their qualifications should
refer to the Master of Counselling or Master of Counselling (Honours) courses
