Introductory comments
The Graduate Diploma in Humanities course is offered on the Hobart campus on a full-fee
paying basis only. The course may be completed in a minimum of one year by full-time
study or a maximum of two consecutive years by part-time study.
Candidates whose study has been interrupted by illness, or other reasonable cause, may
be permitted to complete the course over a period not exceeding one additional year in the
case of a full-time candidate and two additional consecutive years in the case of a
part-time candidate.
Candidates may currently undertake studies in any one of the following specialisations:
•
Classics (School of History and Classics)
•
History (School of History and Classics)
•
Philosophy (School of Philosophy)
The relevant field of specialisation is indicated in the award of the Graduate Diploma. For
instance, a diplomate who has completed the specialisation in History would use the
award abbreviation ‘GradDipHum(Hist)’.
Admission & prerequisites
To be admitted to the course applicants must have qualified for admission to the degree of
Bachelor of Arts or another Bachelor’s degree of the University of Tasmania. Applicants
should have also successfully completed a major in the discipline area in which they
intend to study, and should have obtained Credit results or better in units to a minimum
value of 37.5% at the 200/300 levels in that discipline.
Applicants who have not completed a major in the relevant discipline area, but have done
so in another discipline, or have work experience which is considered suitable preparation
for studies for the Graduate Diploma may be accepted. In such cases applicants are still
required to have obtained Credit results or better in units to a minimum value of 37.5% at
the 200/300 levels in the discipline undertaken.
In special cases the Faculty may accept applicants who have completed an approved
three-year course at a lower standard.
Course objectives
The course enables graduates who may not have qualified for admission to an Honours
program to undertake in-depth studies at a postgraduate level in their chosen field of
specialisation. The course thus acts as a bridge to later higher degree studies.
General provisions
Candidates may not, without the consent of the Faculty, submit for examination for the
Graduate Diploma any work which has previously been submitted for any degree or
diploma.
