SAC Minutes September 6th, 2013 3:00pm I. Call to Order Meeting called to order at 3:20 pm. II. Roll Call No quorum is established with 2 voting members. III. Approval of Minutes Tabled to next meeting. IV. Approval of Agenda Tabled to next meeting; discussion will continue. V. Guest Speakers a. Student Government Student Advocate Alin Cepoi Chairman Cepoi – Student advocate. Few announcements. Working on 2 academic appeals. Both are working on syllabus issues. Because of ambiguity on the syllabus students may receive higher grades than they actually deserve. Second topic is scholarships; all are online except the decentralized scholarships, like the women center. I promote the scholarships. Last but not least, we’ve talked about Pita Pit. I totally support this idea of having it on campus; it’s a different restaurant. In regards to voting online I believe that we should have students make it mandatory, and put a hold on their account until they vote. I’ve always been a supporter of having questions online. Not sure if it’s legal or not, but it’s the idea to have more people vote. Agree. That way we can have all people online. We can get more physical copies. Chairman Cepoi – These are all related to students, they should be voted. Nick Tillem was on the University Committee but he is no longer with us so Aaron Anderson will replace him. b. Student Government Treasurer Joe Turner Treasurer Turner - Asked to come here today by your chairman and present and idea to you. That idea is to conduct a monthly round-table event, on an alternate 2 week schedule from Osprey Voice. We’d be discussing different issues each week. Can use all locations, ballrooms, green, flagpole; see who runs with it. This way we can get an idea to see where students’ priorities lie. Sen. Anderson – I liked it not only for topics that are general but to follow up on Osprey Voices and get a little bit more feedback. This way we’re not voting on Osprey Voice questions at every committee that we have. We’d be alternating between a round table open discussion forums. VI. Chair Report Sen. Anderson – We’re trying to keep the signs that we’ve put up, as there is not official sign policy. I have to change the slips of paper; if anyone would like to help me after the meeting, I would greatly appreciate. It’s to advertise the next general senate meeting. VII. Old Business VIII. New Business Tabled to next meeting; discussion will continue. a. Discuss Possible Changes to In-person Osprey Voice Sen. Anderson – Our attorney general and pro-tempore like having a uniform and group outing of when the senators do Osprey Voice. We’d do it maybe a few different times on that Tuesday or Wednesday, or throughout that week, either with Osprey Voice t-shirts or your Senate polos, which will be in soon. Sen. Reich – When we go out in a group we get a lot of the same results. I strive for 50 when I do mine to get as many varying results as possible to get a good cross-section. We may not want to give them the temptation for all the senators to mark the same answers for the survey. I think it would be easier and more fun for the senators, but it would get a better cross-section to do it individually at different times of the week. Sen. Anderson – We are moving speedily ahead to have more elections in an online aspect. According to President Brady it’s a great idea to use that same platform for Osprey Voice. Chairman Cepoi – Where would this be available? Sen. Anderson – To my knowledge it would be very easily accessible to all students; located on a myWings tab. b. Discuss Possible Roundtable (a two (2) day event in which Senators engage the student body on various issues of student concern) Issues/Topics. Sen. Anderson – We would do one on Wednesdays. Senator Antworth will be doing Market Days trying to attract senators to fill the vacant positions and inform them about the elections and appointments process. I would like to see a volunteer sign up to hand out left over finals frenzy scantrons, mints, pencils, green books, and have people fill out Osprey Voice. To get more than one person there and get Osprey Voices filled out. It would also be nice to have different tables and different senators throughout campus. It’s a passive way to get people to join, but the giveaways could help. It’s something obviously we’ll discuss with a fuller meeting, representation of senators. What would we be doing? Sen. Anderson – It’s very open. You get a panel of students/outside speakers to talk about topics that are relevant to students and you have the senators collect the information. Again, the idea of being in SAC is that you are liaison between student government and students. We want to relate any issues going on between the two. Do we have the topics? Treasurer Turner – When Megan Jones originally came up with the idea, it was supposed to be around the same time as elections so students’ minds are already on SG, and getting them engaged in SG; getting their reaction and initial thoughts from the election. I think it’s a good time to get good feedback and the natural excitement from an election. Sen. Anderson - The topics we’d like to have in our next round table are the things that are voted on by students, whether it’s new parties or anything else going on in the elections. We’d have parts of different branches come up with ideas for the things voted on. c. Vote on Osprey Voice questions: i. During your time at UNF has your experience/interaction with Academic Advising had a positive or negative impact on your educational experience? Please explain. ii. During your time at UNF has your experience/interaction with One Stop had a positive or negative impact on your educational experience? Please explain. iii. Would you support a Pita Pit in the new Clubhouse building, between The Villages and The Cove? If not, what food vendor would Vice President Namen – Essentially the main focus was to put out something there that’s different from the variety we have on campus. When we heard they wanted a Chartwells there the members quickly reacted and wanted to do something about it. As you remember President Fassi asked the senate, which they wanted, and the senate unanimously decided on something outside of Chartwells. Pita Pit really jumped out at us immediately; it provides a cuisine that is not on this campus – Mediterranean food. It’s a healthy option with different options within it: meat lovers, vegetarian, vegan, gluten free. It’s something that is growing in Jacksonville that started at the beaches and is now also downtown. They’re extremely excited to come to campus. We wanted to propose it to you guys and see what you guys think and we wanted to confirm it with an Osprey Voice. Where would it be? Vice President Namen – It would be in the new club house by the Osprey Coves and the Village. Myself, Dr. Gonzalez and President Fassi went to pita pit to taste the food and see the design set up. It matches up really well, the design itself, with the way the club house is set up. Despite the normal day options, they have a little sliding door where you can come up there and order right then. They want something with easy access extremely late at night at any time. How late will the clubhouse be open? Vice President Namen - The target is 24/7. It would probably start a little shorter than that to see how it would fit with the students. Including pita pit. Chairman Cepoi - When would the project start? Pita pit? Vice President Namen - As soon as we get a lot of traction with it. If the students want and vote for it we’ll push for it. The project has already begun. The space is already being built; equipment has been ordered for the space. I’m sure we can move fast. Fortunately for us the equipment Chartwells already bought will work for any vendor. IX. X. XI.
