Student Remarks

Crystal Pino. Junior – I’m sure everyone remembers last senate meeting, the little mini-sermons from Paige and Joe about our responsibilities. I shared my experience that I went out and did with Joe and of course he urged me to share it with everyone. Truthfully it was very simple. I was in class, and the girl next to me saw in my notebook that I had something written about senate and she asked me if I was in student government and a couple of questions. And I decided to take it a step further and told her that we’re the voice of the students, and you’re a student so what would you like to see. And of course, as the cliché, she said parking. Obviously I didn’t get anything super new and original out of her but to hear what she thought about what we did and to hear her concerns about her school, reminded me of what my responsibilities were. I want to thank Joe and

Paige for encouraging me t do that. And I wanted to share that with all of you and that it wasn’t awkward or weird.

Staranzo Caudio. Junior/Senior. History – Hello senators and future senators. First I would like to say congratulations because some of you will be validated. And some of you are getting appointment and to you

I’d also like to say congratulations because this is a very big step in your career at UNF and hopefully one day on an even bigger level. I would like to say that before you guys get here, the people that are here already, I want you guys to really think about why you’re here and what it is that you want from here. The reason why I ask that is is because every single time I step in here I think about it; I think about what do I want out of senate, and what do the students deserve out of me. To be completely honest, they deserve everything. The students put us in and they deserve our very best. That means they deserve our honesty, they deserve our commitment. They deserve 100% quality senators. If you are not wanting to do that and you’re not willing to give that to them, then to be completely honest you do not need to be here. I’m not only challenging the new senators that are coming in I’m also challenging the old senators that are already here. Discuss. I have senators that don’ts like to discuss things. It doesn’t matter if you completely don’t like this request; I think there’s so many important things that need to be discussed. We don’t discuss things like we should. It is our responsibility not only to the students in this room but the 16,000 students that go here. If we’re not discussing things then we’re not giving them our best.

Guest Speakers a.

DeeAnne Crookham

Good afternoon. I’m here to talk about the UNF Traditions project. I’ll speak briefly about what the project is and use most of my time to hear from all of you. The Traditions Project is an effort to find out what existing traditions have the most meaning to the campus community. This is, we put together a campus-wide committee that put together a definition of the term tradition so we’re all on same page. A UNF tradition is an experience that endures through generations, evokes a sense of shared identity and loyalty, and is embrace by the community. We’re defining experience very broadly. It can be an event, a practice, it can be a superstition, could be anything that goes on in residents halls at night that the administration doesn’t know about. I’m here today to here from you all what traditions are. Other schools like Texas A&M says that howdy is one of their traditions that makes it a friendly and welcoming campus. Occidental College has something called a birthday fountain. Columbia has OrgoNight where the marching band shows up in the library at midnight and puts on a show for everyone studying. This is just something to give you an idea of the range of things we’re looking for. It can be wide-range. At this point I’d like to hear from all of you. So when we talk about tradition what are things that come to mind. Some things to think about: any area on campus, but keep anything in mind.

Sen. Moore – JU Tailgate.

Sen. Caudio – Seeing alumni ospreys and swooping at them and they swoop back.

DeeAnne Crookham – Big events on campus everyone attends?

Sen. Caudio – Fall Concert

Chief Justice Goetz – Homecoming festivities like lip-sync.

Sen. Caudio – The first 2 years I was here they had a step show with the black Greek fraternities and sororities; that was amazing.

Sen. Turner – DM is pretty huge.

President Fassi – Taking picturea next to the fountain after the commencement ceremony after everyone graduates.

Sen. Caudio – Midnight breakfast before finals.

Chief Justice Goetz – Ozzie doing weird dances during the games; his pelvic thrust

DeeAnne Crookham – What about places to gather on campus? If you’re meeting up with friends?

Chief Justice Goetz – Ogier’s garden.

Sen. Caudio – Our beautiful SU

Ryan Traher – Tommy G.

DeeAnne Crookham – Other things like that around studying or taking tests that you do before taking a test for good luck?

Chief Justice Goetz – Coming to SG to get scantrons

DeeAnne Crookham – What are other traditions you all participate in?

Ryan Traher – Hanging out on green

Sen. Moorison- Basketball games; swooping for free throws

Sen. Bachmann – $0.50 wings at boathouse.

Sen. Caudio – OP movie nights are starting to become a really big thing and also Club Alliance Club Fest and the Luau.

President Fassi – UF baseball game

Sen. Caudio – The whole UNF/Osprey undefeated football thing

Sen. Moore – The painted talons right next to SU

Ryan Traher – the Rivercity rumble

OP Director Chwalisz – Spending the night with Tommy G Carpenter and studying all night

Sen. Moore – Crashing FL/GA tailgate

DeeAnne Crookham – What are you going to remember when you leave UNF? When you run into other alums what will you talk about with them?

Chief Justice Goetz – I know most people go to 6 th south a lot at the beach

Sen. Anderson – How much the geese annoy us

President Fassi – Circling the garages

DeeAnne Crookham – I’ll tell you all how the rest of the project will go. We’ll keep doing focus groups across campus throughout the semester and surveys. If you have any suggestion you can always email me. For the first couple of weeks for the semester we will hold open comments and forums and post traditions online

so you can see. After that the committee will narrow it down to the most meaningful to UNF. We’ll have

Traditions Week leading up to homecoming and have a big list of core UNF traditions. This is meant to be an evolving list. Things will drop off and new traditions will start; de-emphasize non-important ones anymore.

Please keep suggestions coming. And spread the word about the survey on our page. Hopefully we’ll hear from you in January when we have our list up.

Judicial Branch Report a.

Chief Justice – Alex Goetz ( sgajc@unf.edu

) (5-minutes)

In the Judicial Branch, everything is going smoothly but there is one thing: we’ve gotten a few questions; I know the Spinnaker has asked a few questions. The parking advisory council was last week. There was a proposal to reduce the number of premium spots in external lots by a total of 95. It will take 218 passes out of the sale of premium pass total sales because these spots are being underutilized or the demand for them was nonexistent due to geographic location. People with these passes are more than likely trying to park in garages even though the garages are filled.

Executive Agency Reports: (3-minutes each) a.

Osprey Productions – John Chwalisz & Vivian Taylor opdir@unf.edu

If you remember from last time I had a visual aid but this time it’s in the form of Vivian Taylor. From here on out I’ll try to bring a different coordinator each time.

Vivian Taylor – Good afternoon. I just want to talk about a few past events. Last week we had pumpkin carving: students came out to SU Market Days and carved pumpkins to take home. We started with bout 108 pumpkins. We started carving at 9:00 and all were gone by 12:30. Trivia was this past week. We had a good amount of teams come out to The Boathouse and it was done by our event coordinate Zane. Students had a lot of fun. This past Wednesday we had Disney double feature: we showed Mulan and Toy Story and that was put on by Walter Pillows. The students had a great time; everyone sang along. Everyone loves singing Disney songs. We had great attendance. We had CDRC bring the kids. This Saturday is KickAss2: one of our cinema

Saturdays. Elysium is next Wednesday and Monsters University is the week after that.

John Chwalisz – Who attended our concert last week? For the next concert in the spring I want to see all the hands raised. We had about 3500 in attendance. The artist loved being on campus; they thought we were one of the best campuses they’ve been too. I huge thanks to Hayley Guerra, Tony Stevens, Brett Weisman, and

Thomas Dobrowolski. Make sure you guys give them a big thanks. If you see me or any of my coordinators feel free to ask any questions.

Sen. Waychoff - Of the 3500 how many of those were non-student tickets?

John Chwalisz - About 500. So about 3000 were students.

Sen. Caudio – Not really a question: just want to say thank you for putting on a great show.

John Chwalisz - We appreciate it. b.

Club Alliance – Brett Weisman sgacluba@unf.edu

We need to give OP another round of applause for that. Sorry it’s just me. Vivian declined to do my report as well. November 15 th will be our last general meeting for the semester as well. At the forum there will be something presented by Joe Turner to talk about club funding for the future. Last club fest was last week and we’ll pick those back up in the spring.

Also I’d just like to say, it was really cool to see some of the events that John Chwalisz and I started or continued were a part of the tradition for you guys. So thank you for that.

XI.

Executive Branch Reports a.

Attorney General – Paige Lehman sgaag@unf.edu

(3-minutes)

Good Afternoon Senators!!

By a raise of hands, how many senators read over the bills that were emailed out to you by your Senate

President? And please be honest.

Every single senator should have their hands raised and have a copy of the Constitution and Statutes, governing documents that give this branch its power, in front of them at all meetings. This binder doesn’t leave my side, it comes to all Student Government meetings with me and I implore all of you in this room to do the same. As Gary Hopkins once said, “An apology can be a wonderful thing so long as it is infrequent and from the heart. However, beware of the person who justifies bad behavior with apologies. For them it is a means to an end, and quite often at your expense.”

Be accountable, take responsibility for your actions and be prepared when you come to this room to represent the students. There are several bills on the agenda today. Please read over them thoroughly, ask questions, and debate. If you are voting a certain way, whether it be yes or no; you are voting that way because you think that it is in the best interest of the students. Therefore, you all should be standing up during discussion, announcing why you are voting a certain way and try to persuade others to vote along with you because you feel it is in the best interests of the students.

Furthermore, there are several appointments being heard today. Remember, ask questions; are these individuals that will benefit Student Government and represent the student body to the best of their ability.

Are they accountable, responsible; will they uphold their duties as a public servant?

Please take the initiative, my door is always open as are the doors of your senatorial leaders. Ask us about our governing documents, Roberts Rules, How to write a bill, or if you have any questions whatsoever regarding

Student Government. Take the initiative and be the best Senator you can be. b.

Treasurer – Joe Turner sgasbt@unf.edu

(3-minutes)

I’d like to start by thanking and recognizing Sen. Crystal Pino in taking the extra effort and going above and beyond with your job and taking it seriously. Thank you for your extra effort. An update on a couple of initiatives I’ve been working on: there is a parking garage proposed by the University. It is currently being considered being put in next to the Fine Arts Garage. It’s still in the design phase and they’re still looking at how it’s going to look. If everything stays on plan it should be open in January of 2015. Parking monitors is something the Fassi Administration has been working on. It has been evaluated and sent out to the CR official campus planning proposal system. It is currently with a consultant to look at fees and all the feasible ways to get this done. This will be a vital service to students who get parking permits in the garages. The next initiative I have to update is on Pita Pit. It has been evaluated by the Vice President and President of the

University and funding has been secured for it. Everything looks good for Pita Pit to open up in spring.

Yesterday Aaron Anderson concluded his 2 nd day of round tables. I invited myself and some members of the parking advisories to attend.

I have a couple ideas I will take back to the parking advisory council. I want to recap about a decision proposed to Shari and the University council: we cut 95 premium spaces from current premium inventory.

These are in lots external to the core of campus. That lowers the effective ratio of premium passes to the higher and more prominently in demand.

We handle these little issues, little by little. No drastic moves but we’ll always get better. In a few years we’ll take away those reasons about the parking solution.

Sen. Caudio – Does that mean that the premium spots in the core of campus are not going to be premium anymore?

Treasurer Turner – No there will still be premium spots.

Sen. Waychoff – The Pita Pit on campus, will it be a real pita pit?

Treasurer Turner – It will be.

President Fassi – Just to clarify, Vice President Shuman has to approve the recommendations.

Sen. Moore – How many passes have they sold?

Treasurer Turner – There is a target to sell 2.3 premium passes for every premium space. We didn’t completely eliminate premium for any of those lots but we cut them down to reduce the effective core campus ratio

Sen. Wolf – But if they’re not premium what are they?

Treasurer Turner – In Alumni hall, 70 that are eliminated are now discount. Lot 18, 53, 14 are designated like that. Other spots were from housing are going to be housing. c.

Vice President – Billy Namen sgavpres@unf.edu

(3 minutes)

Few things I want to talk about: first thing is universal scantrons. Just to give you an update on where it’s at.

Currently I am now going around campus with our lovely Director of Governmental Affairs Hailey Guerra and meeting with all the provosts and the deans to rally behind us and give us the support to talk to the faculty and staff. We’ve also talked to Dr. Moore who is the chair of campus technology committee. Looks

like it will be narrowed to red and green. Alin & I have been working on 2 projects: first, the vending machine. Hopefully we’ll be placing scantron vending machines right outside of the rotunda doors. Students want scantrons when they came up but they can’t always get them because they come before we’re open or after we’re closed. We want to open it up to all students for 24/7 access. It will be available to any UNF student. There will be limited access, just like you would be going up to the rotunda and getting scantrons.

There’s a card swipe that allows you to get 2 scantrons every 24 hours. The second project: SG Bulletin boards. Alin has been working hard on these. They’re outside chick-fil-a in alumni square and it has not been taken care of at all. It’s not utilized to its maximized potential. What we’re thinking about doing is maybe putting some TVs there to run SG ads or promotional videos. Maybe we can put a glass door there to lock up the area. The last project is called We Car Share. For the expense of 2 housing parking spots, one in the

Crossings and one in the Fountains. There will be 2 free enterprise cars parked there. A student has to pay a

$50 membership fee and then they can rent out a car for as long as you want for around $10/hour.

Specifically this is targeted for housing students who don’t’ have a car. It gives students the opportunity to be more mobile. d.

President – Carlo Fassi sgapres@unf.edu

(5-minutes)

I have to begin by thanking all of you, specifically the senators, for allowing me to work with some incredibly motivated people at the back of the room. The reports you heard by the agency directors and members of my staff, and the reports you didn’t hear, truly show why they were chosen to serve in the positions you do; everyone from Hailey Guerra to Zahni Thuzar to Joe Turner. Also I’d like to recognize Ms. Betty Garris who is in attendance with us. We named the Business & Accounting office after her and it’s so great to see her tonight. She is still Momma G to all of us. Ryan Traher, the Director of Communications has been working with the President’s office for a little event that hasn’t been done in recent years. On December 3rd we will be hosting coffee in the Starbucks lounge. President Delaney and I will be taking questions from any student in the area for a certain amount of time starting at 10am. Not only is it a good PR move for the president but it gives students the opportunity to let known issues to me and President Delaney.

On Wednesday of last week, the FSA approved the legislative agenda. There are 3 components: an endorsing campaign called Hardhats for Higher Education. It’s essentially a push to incentivize funding for facilities. We also are lobbying to grant instate residency status to all veterans, to children of undocumented immigrants who are US citizens, and undocumented immigrants that are also US Citizens. We’re working on a single page hand out that will be sent to Senate President Brady and forwarded to all of you specifically detailing what all of these are. I will be constantly updating you on what the situation is in Tallahassee in regards to these items.

On March 16 is Rally in Tally for this upcoming session. Previous Senate Presidents have made it mandatory for all student senators to attend. I highly encourage Senate President Brady to do the same. This is an incredible opportunity to meet state representatives. It’s really an opportunity you don’t get too often.

Besides that we will offset Florida at 3pm today. I would also ask that if you don’t have anything going on at

3 o’clock and we will be watching at Sneakers. I don’t necessarily know where it is but someone does. Our official watch party will be there

Sen. Baker – What was the day again for Rally in Tally?

President Fassi – March 16.

Sen. Moore – Where did you say the Q&A is going to be on December 3 rd ?

President Fassi - Coffee with the presidents; in the Starbucks lounge next to the library.

Legislative Cabinet Reports a.

Constitution and Statutes Committee – Chairwoman Kaitlin Ramirez ( sgacsc@unf.edu

)

I hope you got my email that tomorrow’s Senator Orientation is cancelled and it will be rescheduled early next semester. I look forward to seeing you all then.

My committee was short last week. We had one absence hearing and I’ll let Emily talk more in her report about the CR results.

Sen. Caudio – Will orientation be on Saturday?

Sen. Ramirez – Most likely.

b.

Budget and Allocations Committee – Chairman Collin Waychoff ( sgabac@unf.edu

)

At the last committee meeting we had a travel request. We have about $7,981.82 remaining in thetravel balance. c.

Elections and Appointments Committee – Chairwoman Emily Antworth ( sgaesac@unf.edu

)

We had a lot of appointments come up to my committee tonight. Elections went pretty well. Our CR passed with 292 votes. Thank you for working the poles. d.

Student Advocacy Committee – Chairman Aaron Anderson ( sgasac@unf.edu

)

It has been brought to my attention that we may have some senators not going through the due process to do the Osprey Voice. I would like to give all of you the benefit of the doubt and allow you the opportunity to correct that if you have. Come to the office after the senate meeting or whenever my office hours are posted and come get a new Osprey Voice if you have not gone through the correct process to get those filled out. I was going through the results from the last Osprey Voice and the one before to see if I can come up with any specific examples of senators not going through due process. From the results of the last Osprey Voice in regards to the Pita Pit: 390 students voted on computers, 393 in person; for the last 2 questions: 315 yes’s on computers for Pita Pit, 75 no; and 251 in person yes results to the Pita Pit question and 82 no’s. So that definitely comes in good standing with what’s been going on with pita pit. From the round table discussions from Wednesday and Thursday, I want to thank you all for coming out. I have some incomplete results I’ve tabulated. Let me repeat the questions: Were you aware that there was an election last week? About half said yes and about half had negative responses. For question 2; this is all on Wednesday as Thursday was the parking discussion; are you aware of the process…we had about 50/50 yes/no answers. There were some significant answers. Votes are counted and a winner is selected I guess. You need to fill out a ballot to become eligible to run and then you run and then since there are not enough spots to be filled you get in.

Question 3: have you ever voted in SG election & why were you completed to vote or not to vote? About

50/50 yes/no answers. Some significant answers; yes but only because I like Carlo, I never know who stands for what or what they plan on doing. We have some missing information going out there, or lack thereof no because I’m an exchange student. As far as prompt 4, we have do you think that your vote in a student election counts or matters? Here again we had about 50/50 of the ones I’ve been through. The follow up to that, what would have you feel like your opinion matters? No to the first part; I think most people pick randomly. We have some misinformation. For positive significant answer; yes every vote counts. My opinion would matter if I turned in a ballot; if you never vote you’re opinion doesn’t count. For roundtable discussions, I’m still looing to tabulate those. We will be doing Osprey Voice on November 19 th and 20 th of this month. We will have a sign up sheet in the back for you at the end of the meeting today. Well be doing 8 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday and looking to do the same as last time with the computers but without the paper ballots so everyone can get the 35 responses needed. e.

University Affairs Committee – Chairman Justin Turner ( sgauac@unf.edu

)

The sales committee approved 27 people for SAILS scholarships. The General Education Council approved the new GenEd proposition. Dr. Samuel Kimbell in his email said the SG voice, the JR we passed, definitely helped get the proposal approved. Nothing else to report. f.

Senate President Christopher Brady ( sgasp@unf.edu

)

I first want to apologize for the misinformation at the last meeting, about the swearing in of the senators.

New senator orientation was cancelled for orientation. We’ll be holding that probably the first week of the spring semester. The way it is now, we only have 1 committee and 1 senate meeting left. I didn’t want to have new senators sworn in and then go through training then forget all that training. If you want to come do a bill-writing workshop with me just let me know.

XIII.

Senate Appointments a.

Christina Lassiter

Sen. Antworth – She’s been working very hard to get through. The elections committee talked to her last week. She talked a lot about experience and leadership qualities. Please give her your attention.

Christina Lassiter – I am a junior here at UNF, international studies major and poly-sci minor. I know that you’re looking for leadership skills, which I think I have. I was involved in a youth group called the 4age. I

held parliamentarian, secretary, vice president and president positions. Also I was involved in a mock legislature, and held the role of lobbyist, representative, and senator. I love UNF here and I always wanted to go here. My grandfather actually help found this university and I really wanted to attend a university that he helped build.

Sen. Turner – Can you explain what you did in 4age?

Christina Lassiter – The club involved livestock and legislature which involved speech competitions.

Sen. Caudio – Why didn’t you run in the past election?

Christina Lassiter – I attempted to but there was a problem with my paper work.

Sen. Gloster – if you are fortunate enough to become part of senate which committee would you like to be on?

Christina Lassiter – B&A

Sen. Moore – Why?

Christina Lassiter – I know they’re in charge of the budget and also helping groups get money to further their education.

Sen. Henning – What would be your ultimate goal in SG?

Christina Lassiter – I don’t have s specific goal in mind but I really want to do a great job and serve the students.

Sen. Caudio – Van you name the other committees?

Christina Lassiter – E&A CSC, UA, SAC, B&A

Sen. Turner – Are you involved anywhere else on campus?

Christina Lassiter – Yes the Baptist Collegiate Ministry.

Sen. Anderson – So can you elaborate what was wrong with the paperwork in the election process?

Christina Lassiter – I collected 172 signatures but only 148 got to the election supervisor.

Sen. Brown – what do you think you can bring to SG?

Christina Lassiter – With my past experience, I am familiar with Robert’s rules of orders, and I’ve heard many senators about being prepared with the constitution and I know I can do those things.

Motion from Sen. Turner to confirm Christina Lassister to a senate seat. Second. No objections.

Sen. Turner – I definitely think with the experience of the mock legislature or not, that you will bring a lot to the table for this. Even though she wasn’t able to go through the elections process. We should deny someone who pretty much did everything twice.

Sen. Waychoff – I actually got the privilege to work alongside her at Chick-fil-a. I know she has a very strong work ethic.

Announcements

I would like to yield my time for announcements to Ms. Betty Garris who gave me the goose bumps when I saw her on the elevator at the second floor. Sorry if I’m a little nervous right now.

Betty Garris – This is entirely my honor and I appreciate this. For those of you who had anything to do with my name over the business office I’m humbled and I thank you. It was my desire from the time I started here to encourage all of you.

Automobiles have the largest piece of glass wear in the front; the smallest is your rearview mirror. While it’s important to keep your eyes on what’s coming up on your vision, the focus should be up front, in the future.

But you’re decisions, what you’re thinking and where your decisions lay is more important today. The past has its place and should be counseled to make sure you’re staying in those legal lines. Each of you in your college career has learned not what to think but how to think. And how to think constructively to do what you believe in with all your heart. I don’t know how you got here; but the fact of the matter is that you did your job and you served well.

Good luck, keep it with you. Those of you who are still going to be here, be mentors, keep it with you. For those of you who don’t know, stand up quickly and show them it’s okay to ask questions. Wherever you go in life, you’ll

always be in my heart and I’ll always be proud of you for making a difference and standing up. When you make your word and you do the right thing to do. Remind your friends because it’s the right thing to do. I’m very proud of who they are as well. I will love you always. And God blesses you always. I hope to come visit sometime.
