Whereas, approximately 22% of Ithaca College students receive Federal Grant Aid every
year; and
Whereas, students receiving Federal Grant Aid at Ithaca College receive an average
amount of approximately $5,427; and
Whereas, approximately 73% of incoming Ithaca College students take out student loans
to help pay for there first-year college costs, averaging $5,911; and
Whereas, 88% of all Pell Grant recipients who graduate from four-year colleges already
carry student loans and owe on average $4,750 more than their higher income peers; and
Whereas, Public Service Loan Forgiveness and Pay As You Earn help college graduates
better economically survive and thrive in the United States; and
Whereas, college students across the United States already face crippling interest rates
on their student loans; and
Whereas, the Ithaca College student body overwhelmingly believes that a more educated
populace is beneficial to society and democracy at large; and
Whereas, the Ithaca College student body overwhelmingly believes that the Federal
Government should help make it more affordable for citizens to be educated at American
colleges and universities; and
Whereas, students at Ithaca College and their families would face greater financial
hardships if $150 Billion were to be cut from higher education financing by the federal
government; it is therefore
Resolved, that the Ithaca College Student Government Association formally denounces
the massive cuts made to higher education in the proposed Fiscal Year 2016 Budget, and
urges all members of Congress to vote against cuts to higher education funding, and to
support measures that will make it more affordable for citizens to attend American
colleges and universities.
