4. Justification for new course or course revision or renumbering:
This curriculum change is a part of a revision of the engineering program to
achieve several goals: 1) more closely align content with general engineering
programs; 2) adjust the timing and coverage of materials to support success in
the fundamentals of engineering exam; 3) adjust the sequence of science,
mathematics, and engineering courses to better integrate the content. These
changes have been developed and approved by the department faculty and
have been endorsed by the Engineering Advisory Board.

3012. Thermal and Fluid Systems (4) (S) 3 lecture and 2 lab hours per week. P: ICEE 3004. Explores
systems approach to design, analysis, and engineering of thermal and fluid systems using
mathematical and software tools.

ICEE 3012 Thermal and Fluid Systems

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course each student will be able to:
 Describe the basic scientific principles of thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics.
 Apply mathematical equations to describe basic thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
 Describe applications of thermal, fluid, and heat transfer systems and describe the transfer theoretical
descriptions to actual system analysis.
 Model Thermal/Fluid Systems Applications of Thermal/Fluid Principles, to power producing systems
and refrigeration systems
 Analyze Elements of Thermal Design and External vs. Internal Convective Flow Systems
 Design basic thermal and fluid systems through appropriate simplifying assumptions and applying the
relevant governing principles and equations.
 Solve thermal and fluid engineering problems using computational software such as MATLAB.
