COMM Studies 121, 102, and 151: faculty were asked to choose one SLO that has not
yet been assessed

Benchmarks were reached for all courses.
2. Summarize the major assessment results for courses/programs in your area.
Overall, the assessment results were very positive. There was no pattern of
deficiencies seen through the assessment commentaries.
3. Summarize what changes have been made or are planned to be made as a result of
the assessments.
Changes which are planned vary from instructor to instructor and include:
 More emphasis on the connection between essay structure and the development
of logical arguments
 More emphasis on the thesis statement
 Encourage students to read and discuss their papers with friends and family for
feedback which goes beyond peer review
 More emphasis on scaffolding
 More grammar and mechanics review and assessment of student problems
 Introducing research paper earlier on
 Finding ways to make sure that students keep up with tasks

 More emphasis on audience analysis

Faculty as individuals are taking a good look at the effectiveness of their instruction
and consider improvements that may be made to facilitate SLO accomplishment.

7. What resource requests are planned as a result of the assessments?
 A grammar boot camp
 Reduce the number of students in COMM ST classes
 Better organization of HS classes
