Indirect objects are the people or things in a sentence to whom/what or the action of the verb occurs.

I'm talking to José. - Hablo a José.

To whom am I talking? to José.

He gives books to the students - Da unos libros a los estudiantes.

To whom does he give books? – to the students.

Indirect object pronouns are the words that replace the indirect object, which is usually a person.

The Spanish indirect object pronouns are as follows:

1st person me me

2nd person te you

3rd person le him, her, you, it

nos us

os you

les them, you

Like direct object pronouns, Spanish indirect object pronouns are placed in front of the verb.

I'm talking to him. -

He writes to them -

Le hablo.

Les escribe.

I'm giving the bread to you. - Te doy el pan.

She answered me - Ella me contestó.

For infinitives, present participles, and affirmative commands, pronouns can get attached to the end.

OR Voy a decirle - I'm going to tell him.

OR Quiero traerles el regalo - I want to bring the gift to them.

Note: When deciding between direct and indirect objects, the general rule is that if the person or thing is preceded by a preposition (with the exception of the personal a) that person/thing is an indirect object. If it is not preceded by a preposition, it is a direct object.

Llamo a María.

Escribimos a nuestros padres.

¿Visitas a Pablo?

Dijo la verdad a nosotros.

Lupe va a traer las bebidas a Uds.

He’s Reading to me.

They’re talking to you.
