Perez (LAMC) Benjamin Williams (Sylmar Homeowner Council) George Johnson (CPM Director) - Absent Tara Ward (LAMC) Tom Weissbarth Bonnie Bernard Randi Kirk Daniel Villanueva (LAMC) WELCOME/APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The meeting came to order at approximately 5:36 pm in Campus Center Room 4. Minutes from the July 15, 2013 meeting were reviewed by Eugene Hernandez and approved by the committee with changes to include the committees request to schedule a tour of the buildings. REPORT FROM PROJECT DIRECTOR: Executive summary for the A/AA and J Bond monthly report: Campus modernization phase 1, the ADA improvements, has begun on some of the walkways and ramps. Modernization in classrooms to refit for smart classrooms have begun as well as restroom remodels. Campus modernization phase 2 has yet to begin but it will involve the culinary arts and the instructional arts building District’s program management office is reviewing the finalization of the central energy plant as well as the campus master plan Media Arts Center: Defective work has been broken into 3 modules. The first two have been completed and the third phase is at the state level on its way to completion. Question: How much will the setbacks cost? The real issue is time. We have lost about 2 years’ worth of time. Question: What is the estimated completion date? Answer: The building is about 39% complete, but completion should be around spring/summer 2015. REPORT FROM COLLEGE PRESIDENT: President’s Update: Design Build Institute of American awarded the LEED National Award to LAMC and Pankow for the Health Fitness Athletics and the Center for Math and Science Building on the East campus. LAMC will be offering a Winter Intersession and concurrent enrollment for high school students and depending upon enrollment this spring, we may offer a summer session. The state is in a growth mode to improve the enrollment campuses lost with the budget reduction. Question: Friday’s are an underutilized day for instruction. Why not create more classes on Friday Decision making responsibility regarding construction and planning has been moved from LAMC to the program management office at District. LAMC is visited by the WASC Accreditation team every six years and last year LAMC received a warning. The campus is making progress on all the recommendations for 2014. Question: Is it possible to have a written description of how all the problems have been solved and what it still missing submitted to the CCOC committee? Answer: Yes that can be provided for the committee Question: CA legislation is passed a law allowing community colleges to charge more for core classes. Will that impact the LACCD? Answer: The CA legislators passed a pilot law for community colleges to charge additional fees for certain classes. The only community colleges that can afford to participate in this program is the College of the canyons, Long Beach Community College, Pasadena Community College and Santa Barbara Community College and the LACCD is against the legislation. The President confirmed that LAMC is co-tenants with SIBL, but are not in business with the baseball league. OLD BUSINESS: Prior CCOC members should have received a letter to nominate others. Two outside candidates were nominated for membership. Members were reminded that those that have 3 unexcused absences will be removed from the committee. The membership requested that Gateway schedule a tour of the media arts building. NEW BUSINESS: A CCOC member spoke about the Citizens against Sediment Mining group and their upcoming meeting with the LA County about the sediment cleanout. A CCOC member asked if Gateway Construction and Engineering could donate the land at 13245 Hubbard St. for LAMC to use. The Gateway representative informed the committee that the property is privately owned. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting adjourned at 6:58 pm.
