Writing Mentor Application (Graduate Students) 1
Being a Writing Mentor is a unique opportunity. It isn’t a “typical” job. Mentors have the
opportunity to wear many hats such as teacher, tutor, learner, writer, motivator, facilitator,
etc.
While there are many factors that play into being a successful writing mentor, there are
some general skills that are valuable such as oral and written communication skills, one-onone and collaboration skills (with other mentors, students, faculty, and staff),
presentation/public speaking skills, as well as personal skills of working with limited
supervision, taking initiative, and solving problems.
As a mentor, your job description would include primarily working one-on-one with 25
student writers from a Writing Intensive Course. Your specific duties will be arranged with
the instructor of the Writing Intensive Course, but may include reading and responding to
student writing, meeting individually with students, presenting on writing related topics and
participating in weekly staff meeting. Writing mentors work 10 hours a week for $15 an
hour. If you think this position is a good fit for you, please apply!
