Why visit the Speech Communication Center (SCC)? Clear communication is
vital to a successful academic career. At the SCC, we will help you become a more
confident and competent oral communicator through instruction, collaborative
consultation, and feedback. Instructors across the disciplines agree that the oral
communication and presentation skills of students improve after receiving
informed, quality feedback from the SCC. What services does the SCC offer? The SCC will help you research, organize, and
deliver an effective speech or presentation (individual or group), nail your job
interview, manage your communication anxiety, or simply learn to speak in a more
professional manner. In addition, the SCC offers workshops throughout the year on
specific oral communication topics including managing speaking anxiety, using
dynamic delivery, organizing presentations effectively, and professional speaking
etiquette. We can also create custom workshops that are tailored to specific classes,
business, and organizations.
Who are the consultants that will be helping me? Consultants in the SCC are
graduate students in the School of Communication that have experience in the area
of oral communication and who have been trained through intensive instruction and
practice to work with our clients on all aspects of their oral communication skills.
Who can utilize the services of the SCC? The SCC is open to all students, faculty,
staff, alumni, and members of the community. We encourage faculty and staff
members from across campus, students from all majors, and citizens in Pitt County
to utilize our services to become more effective communicators.
How much does a session at the SCC cost? Nothing. All services of the SCC are
free of charge for everyone!
What should I bring? If you are working on a speech or presentation, please bring
notes, outlines, PowerPoint slides, etc. If you are working on professional
communication skills or speaking anxiety, please just bring yourself and we will do
the rest! Please also be prepared to answer specific questions concerning the task at
hand. How do I make an appointment or request a workshop? You can set up an
appointment through the link on the SCC homepage or contact the center through
email at commcenter@ecu.edu or by calling (252) 328-2790. A workshop can be
requested by calling or emailing the SCC directly. This allows the staff a chance to
gather specifics on the topics you want covered, as well as any other particulars,
such as breakout sessions, impromptus, or handouts that you would like to
incorporate.
Do I need to make an appointment? If at all possible, then yes, you should.
Walk-ins are welcome to come in during business hours, but during busy hours, we
can’t guarantee that you won’t have to wait. People with appointments have priority
over walk-ins.
How long does a session last? Each session is scheduled for 30 minutes unless
otherwise noted. Longer sessions are available and just need to be booked ahead of
time.
Will a consultant create my presentation or write my speech for me? No,
consultants will not do your work for you. Our focus is to offer suggestions that will
improve and build on what you have already done. That is why we suggest bringing
any materials (notes, outlines, PowerPoint, etc.) that you have to the session. It is
hard to build something from nothing.
What will the consultant and I discuss? Let the consultant know about any
specific concerns that you want to address. If you have no specific concerns and just
want to improve on your oral communication skills, then the consultant will cover
several topics that cover speech communication in general.
