BNCC/DE.P.3 2005-2006 The University of the West Indies Report of the School of Continuing Studies to the Meeting of the Board for Non-Campus Countries and Distance Education to be held on September 26, 2005 The report covers the period May 2005 to September 2005. OUTREACH AND PUBLIC EDUCATION Country Conference Series The British Virgin Islands conference was held May 26-28, 2005. The keynote speaker for the opening session was Mr. Robert Mathavious, Managing Director of the Financial Services Commission. Mr. Mathavious in his presentation, Back to the Future: Courage, Candour and Commonsense, challenged UWI to deepen its impact, create new partnerships with public and private sectors and education providers and to effectively engage critical stakeholders in the development of the region. Fifteen papers were presented on issues related to health and social services, literature and cultural studies, constitutional issues and financial matters among others. The list of conference presentations is attached. INSTITUTIONAL MANAGEMENT Staff Conference The School held its annual Staff Conference July 11-18, 2005 at Mona. The meeting discussed inter alia the restructuring of the outreach sector and considered issues relating to the improvement of services to the UWI 12 and the structure and functions of the School within a revised sector. The meeting also discussed the role of Resident Tutors in promoting and strengthening Alumni Relations, programme matters and planned activities for the 2005/2006 academic year. Staffing The post of Resident Tutor, Anguilla was advertised regionally. Closing date for applications is October 31, 2005 and it is expected that the post will be filled by February 1, 2006. Retirements The following staff members retired from the service of the SCS and the University during the review period. Ms. Edith Bellot, Resident Tutor, Dominica. Appointed 1985. 1 Prof. Sir Howard Fergus, Resident Tutor, Montserrat. Appointed 1974. Mrs. Beverley Steele, CBE, Resident Tutor, Grenada. Appointed 1973. A function to honour these staff members as well as Dr. Joseph Palacio, who had retired earlier, was held at Mona during the annual staff conference of the School in July. New appointments The following new appointments have been made to the School of Continuing Studies. Mr. Francis Severin as Resident Tutor, Dominica. Mr. Severin is a Dominican by birth and was educated at the UWI in Cave Hill and Mona. His field of work is sociology and educational administration. Mr. Severin was selected from among 24 applicants. Dr. Curtis Jacobs as Resident Tutor, Grenada. Dr. Jacobs is a Trinidadian by birth and was educated at the UWI in St. Augustine and Cave Hill. His field of work is history with a special focus on the history of Grenada. Dr. Jacobs was selected from among 35 applicants. Ms. Gracelyn Cassell as Resident Tutor, Montserrat. Ms. Cassell is a Montserratian by birth and was educated at the UWI Mona and University College London. Her field is library studies and information systems. Ms Cassell was selected from among 18 applicants. Adjustments Dr. Judith Soares is managing the affairs of the SCS in Barbados consequent on the passing of Dr. Bradley Niles. Resumption of duty Dr. Adrian Fraser resumed duty as Resident Tutor, St. Vincent with effect from August 1, 2005 after the end of his sabbatical leave. Change of Name The University has approved a name change for the Trade Union Education Institute. The new name is the Hugh Lawson Shearer Trade Union Education Institute in recognition of Mr. Shearer’s strong role in supporting the establishment of the Institute and his contribution to the Trade Union movement regionally. SPECIAL ACTIVITIES A graduation ceremony was held in Grenada on September 2, 2005 with PVC Carrington in attendance. Also present were the Prime Minister, the Hon. Keith Mitchell and Mrs. Mitchell and the Minister of Education the Hon. Claris Charles.
