Press Release Research in Economics: HEC welcomes Andreu MAS-COLELL 8th December 2005 HEC has recently awarded the title of HEC Professor Honoris Causa to Andreu MAS-COLELL, Professor of Economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. Dr. MAS-COLELL is former Minister of Education and Research for Catalonia, and one of the world’s most recognized economists, renowned for his work in the field of the Game and the General Balance Theories. Compelled to emigrate to the United States because of the FRANCO regime, Andreu MAS-COLELL later obtained his PhD from the University of Minnesota. He eventually became a professor of Economics at Berkeley and at Harvard. The award ceremony took place at HEC during a two day scientific conference organized with researchers from Europe, the United States and Japan. Roger GUESNERIE, Professor at the College of France, and himself a Honoris Causa Professor at HEC, had the pleasure of welcoming Andreu MAS-COLELL. In the past, HEC has awarded the title of Professor Honoris Causa in Economics to Professor Edmond MALINVAUD, as well as to Robert C. MERTON, who shortly thereafter obtained the Nobel Prize in Economics. Designating Professor Andreu MAS-COLELL as a member of HEC’s Honoris Causa faculty, within which he intends to play an active role, illustrates the school’s great interest in teaching and research in the field of Economics. It also honours HEC’s Department of Finance and Economics which, with its 21 professor-researchers publishing regularly in the best international journals, continues to work closely with other institutions, such as ESADE in Barcelona, in the development of Economics research.
