2016 Description and Application instructions
First Peoples Multicultural Advising Services (FPMAS) at The Evergreen State College is accepting applications for new
student staff for the 2016-2017 academic years. We are hoping to fill several work-study positions as well as one or two
institutional opportunities.
FPMAS is a free multicultural resource on campus. We provide comprehensive academic, social and personal advising as
well as community building and educational events from an anti-bias perspective.
Our Multicultural Peer Advisors (MPAS) are trained as para-professionals advisors and assist us with all of our events.
MPA’s also serve as liaisons to different organizations on campus, perform active outreach activities, coordinate events of
their own, work as part of a team and serve as representatives of The Evergreen State College. Our mission is to support
all students in achieving their academic, personal and career goals. We offer specific outreach to students of color and are
open to all students.

2016 Multicultural Peer Advisor Job Description
Compensation and schedule:
 This position requires a time commitment of 8-19 hours a week.
 The starting pay rate is $10.00 an hour
 Students are expected to work 8-9 weeks ea. quarter,
Work schedule: Varies typically between 8am thru 8pm from Mon-Fri. Schedules will be based around student’s class
schedules. Students may be asked to work as early as 8am on some days that they do not have class. Students will have to
be flexible.
Start date: As early as “Orientation” week or Scholars week, as late as the end of week one of the quarter
End date: Through eval week in June & required to work through FPMAS Graduation at the end of the academic year.
Responsibilities:
 All staff will be trained to provide outreach, and support services to multicultural students enrolled at The Evergreen
State College.
 MPA’s may provide outreach and support to multicultural students, and work as liaisons to various offices and
organizations within the college.
Skills and Qualifications:
 Students need to have an interest in working with multicultural students and topics connecting them to the resources
that will support them in their academic and co-curricular endeavors.
 Students should have good listening, outreach and communication skills; an interest in advising; and an interest and
willingness to further develop their personal skills.
 Students will not become fully trained counselors, but should be able to listen empathetically and direct students to
the appropriate resources at TESC.
 They should also have great people skills, combined with willingness to absorb a multitude of details as well as
perform routine office tasks.
 Students must be in good academic standing at TESC. Must have at least 2 quarters of experience as a TESC student.
General Expectations:
 Assist in the advising and referral of all students, individually and in groups.
 Have knowledge of the general policies, procedures and requirements of the college and Student and Academic
Support Services to help students identify appropriate resources.
 Be willing to attend training sessions and complete readings that are provided from FPMAS and other offices to build
various skill sets and work as a liaison to other campus groups.
 Provide the FPMAS staff with feedback regarding student needs & concerns.
 Be willing to perform all outreach tasks such as facilitating workshops and tabling.
 Assist in the development, delivery and assessment of FPMAS programs and events in order to support the mission
and purpose of TESC and the FPMAS office.
 Attend weekly staff meetings (Mondays: 3:15-5), trainings and staff activities.
 Attend a bi-weekly meeting with the Coordinator.
 Complete any paperwork requested by the Coordinator or Director.
 Assist in scheduling appointments, receiving visitors, responding to telephone inquiries and other clerical duties
necessary to maintain the office.

 Maintain confidentiality and possess a strong work ethic.
 Maintain a professional environment; possess personal integrity and willingness for team membership and respect for
differences and cultural integrity.
 Report to work on time and contact the Coordinator or Director if you are unable to work.
 Assist with other office projects as assigned and responsible for upkeep of the front desk and lounge, and surrounding
FPMAS areas.
Educational component:
Must be in good academic standing at TESC and have had at least 2 qtrs. of college experience or equivalent.
