Fantasy Baseball Standards Assessed: 1.3, 5.4 Name ________________________ Algebra 1 Directions: “Fantasy baseball” is a game whereby players manage imaginary baseball teams based on the real-life performance of baseball players, and compete against one another using those players' statistics to score points. In rotisserie scoring, the team who has the best cumulative score in a certain category would get the most points. The team with the second best total would get one less point. This would continue until the last place team gets only one point. Usually for scoring purposes, hitting categories include: R (runs) HR (home runs) RBI (runs batted in) S (stolen bases or steals) AVG (batting average) Using a small, five-team league as an example (Figure 1): Team Don’s Dragons The Slammers Wyoming Wolves Undertakers Miami Beach Bums R 321 320 358 313 299 HR 79 83 93 77 59 RBI 305 303 345 298 256 S 72 45 43 32 47 AVG .295 .276 .275 .294 .291 The above team totals would result in the Wyoming Wolves scoring 5 points for having the highest total of runs, Don’s Dragons scoring 4 points for second highest total, The Slammers scoring 3 points for third highest total, etc. If we do that for each of the five scoring categories we would see (Figure 2): Team Don’s Dragons The Slammers Wyoming Wolves Undertakers Miami Beach Bums R 4 3 5 2 1 HR 3 4 5 2 1 RBI 4 3 5 2 1 S 5 3 2 1 4 AVG 5 2 1 4 3 Total 21 15 18 11 10 At this point Don’s Dragon is in the lead with 21 fantasy points followed closely by the Wyoming Wolves with 18 points. **Note: Usually fantasy baseball leagues also have five pitching categories W (wins), SV (saves), K (strikeouts), ERA (earned run average) and WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched). Most leagues have 10-16 teams, thus it is much more difficult to choose players to draft.** 1 Using the stats given, create a six-player team. For this assignment your players can be from any position. Your goal is to create the best team possible keeping in mind all five scoring categories. Once each student has chosen their players, your teacher will assign you into ‘leagues’. Fantasy points can then be calculated and your ‘league champion’ will be determined. Each of the league champions will qualify for the ‘playoffs’. The league champions will then form their own league to determine the ‘overall classroom champion’. Good luck and have fun! Your team name: ____________________________ Your name: ________________________________ Your team members and stats: Player H/AB R HR RBI S Team Totals Notice AVG was not listed on the table above. You will have to find your team batting average by finding the sum of all the H (hits) divided by the total number of AB (at bats). Record your team AVG here: AVG=_____________ (AVG is always a 3 digit decimal) 2 In the area below, write why you chose each of the players on your team. Player 1: Player 2: Player 3: Player 4: Player 5: Player 6: In the area below, write a short paragraph describing the strengths and weaknesses of your team. Once you find your team totals, wait to be assigned to a league. 3 Directions for determining league champion: Vote on a ‘league commissioner’. This person will create two tables. The first table should have each team listed including all of their total stats (see Figure 1). The second table should have the fantasy points scored for each team (see Figure 2). If you have a six-team league the scoring is 6-5-4-3-2-1. If you have a five-team league the scoring is 5-4-3-2-1. The team with the lowest score always receives 1 point in that category. If there is a tie, average the points together and give each team the same number of points. Tie Example 1: Two teams in a six-team league tie for second and third in a category. Since second place=5 points and third place=4 points, both teams will receive 4.5 points. Tie Example 2: Three teams in a six-team league tie for fourth, fifth, and sixth in a category. Since fourth place=3 points, fifth place=2 points, and sixth place=1 point, each of the three teams will receive 2 points. It is important that each person correctly computed their team totals, thus any person can question or verify the team totals of somebody else’s team. It is best to have several people recalculate the number(s) in question. 4 Fantasy Stats for the Top 25 Players Albert Pujols Álex Rodríguez Alfonso Soriano B.J.
