3 Look at the imagery of the poem Two Scavengers in a Truck on
pages 116–17. Complete the following chart to comment on the
effects of some of the metaphors and similes. One example has been
done for you.
Imagery
What are the effects of the imagery?

The two garbagemen look at
the young couple ‘as if they
were watching some odorless
TV ad/in which everything is
always possible’
‘stoplight’ or ‘red light’
‘the high seas/of this
democracy’
This is a metaphor for a brief period of
time. The rich and poor couples have been
brought together for only a few brief
moments simply because a red traffic
light has stopped both vehicles. Everyone
knows that in a few seconds the light will
change to green and rich and poor will go
their separate ways – it’s only accidental
that they seem close to each other.
