Summer Intern: Finance and Business Operations (FBO) Summary: The Finance and Business Operations Group (FBO) is seeking a high performing professional (graduate or bachelor level student) who is looking for an opportunity to expand their knowledge and skill sets in a variety of areas within the energy and energy-related industry. This individual will spend up to a semester (or summer) as an intern in FBO to acquaint themselves with Pinnacle West Capital Corporation and its main subsidiary, Arizona Public Service (APS). The position requires excellent oral and written communication skills. The candidate should have solid understanding of finance, accounting including strong data management and research capabilities plus ability to work in a matrix reporting environment. The individual will be expected to assist in a variety of assignments within FBO and be a strong team player. This position will be a paid internship and requires minimal travel. As part of this program you will network with other interns and employees across the company. You will be treated as a fulltime employee, with paid holidays and a fun-energetic atmosphere. Responsibilities and Essential Duties: Responsibilities in FBO will include budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis to support business decisions, periodic management business performance reporting, cost trend and root cause analysis, process documentation and communication of results to appropriate levels of Company management. The Intern duties may include the following: Under general supervision, provide support to business units in utilization of capital and O&M budgets, current year and long-range forecasts. Support monthly accounting close and management reporting process by performing budget variance analysis and preparation of variance explanations. Where necessary, coordinate with Accounting to ensure proper financial statement recording and accounting treatment on nonstandard transactions and events. Perform financial analyses supporting development of financial models and execution of variance analysis, cash flow analysis, internal rate of return calculations, operating expense and financial results reporting and analysis, and other related financial analyses. Compile relevant data, update financial modeling and report applications, evaluate and report results. Evaluate operational and financial business scenarios by utilization of corporate financial models. Provide support in the formulation of model inputs and processing of data through financial models. Collaborate with Finance and Business Operations staff, leadership and business unit management in identifying, recommending, and developing tactical and strategic business case opportunities. Compile relevant data, perform variance analyses, updates business operations reports supporting execution of business plan initiative execution and results, and business metric gap analysis. Participate in development, compilation, presentation and communication of performance report packages for management reporting including identification of significant findings and conclusions through the use of existing technology and strong understanding of business unit financial and operations related data. Assist business unit staff in the application and analysis of internal financial models. Qualifications Successful candidates will be pursuing a bachelor or graduate degree within one of the disciplines related to business, finance, accounting, economics, engineering, information technology, or mathematics from an accredited college/university and is enrolled full-time. Must possess good academic aptitude; strong written, verbal communication, and presentation skills; analytical and critical thinking skills, and have the desire to take on significant responsibility.
