Information Competency Application Instructions
Information Competency is required for graduation under Plan A of the General Education
Patterns. The student must complete both the ‘Information’ and ‘Technology’ component of
Information Competency to graduate. A course or a program can fulfill this requirement for one
component or both, after the Curriculum Committee and the Board of Trustees have approved it.
Information Competency, variously described as information literacy, information fluency, eliteracy or electronic literacy, is the ability to find, evaluate, use, and communicate information
in all its various formats. “It combines aspects of library literacy, research methods and
technology proficiency. Information competency includes consideration of the ethical and legal
implications of information and requires the application of both critical thinking and
communications skills,” (Academic Senate of California Community College Information
Competency in the California Community Colleges, 1998).

Each form lists the specific outcomes that course(s) meet. These are numbered from “i1” to “i23” for

hours in the course that relates directly to that specific outcome.
o
Copy the specific lines from the content page of the course outline of record that document how
the course(s) meets the outcome listed on the form.
o
Preface the content line with the content number (example: III.a or 4.b for individual course or
