Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Bioengineering and Biomanufacturing Program Guidelines for all Students Funding Each participant receives a stipend of $5,000 for participation in the program. Other benefits include oncampus housing (provided by the REU), meal and travel allowances, participation in campus-wide REU activities, and full access to university recreational facilities. Student Eligibility 1. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. 2. Applicant must be majoring in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related discipline (e.g. biology, chemistry, physics, or another field of engineering). 3. Applicant must have a 3.3 GPA or greater and have junior or senior status with at least 60 semester hours, or equivalent quarter hours, completed toward their degree by the start of the program. Application Procedure 1. Each student applicant will submit a. a completed application, b. one faculty recommendation letter, c. a resume, and d. a current official transcript. Items (a), (b), and (c) should be submitted electronically to reu@rpi.edu. Item (b) can be sent separately from (a) and (c) as the letter is usually submitted by the recommender to the program. Item (d) needs to be sent via regular mail to the address shown below. Be sure to include keywords for your research area(s) of interest. Examples of keywords can be found on the BME and CBE web pages: http://bme.rpi.edu/research, http://cbe.rpi.edu/research This description will aid in pairing applicants with faculty mentors. It is not the intent of this activity to stimulate "student generated" research ideas; rather, the purpose is to seek contributions to ongoing faculty research areas. 2. Each application will be reviewed after the application deadline. Announcements of acceptance will be made no later than mid-April. Student Requirements 1. Students selected for grant support may not be enrolled in additional courses during the summer. 2. Research hours to be worked and other requirements are determined by individual faculty member’s group a student is assigned to. 3. Each student will be required to participate in REU-wide leadership development events. The REU also includes a number of social events; participation in these is recommended but voluntary. 4. Each student will be required to prepare an abstract, final paper and a poster presentation describing the results of his/her research program. Purpose The purpose of this program is to involve outstanding students who have completed their sophomore year and are interested in pursuing advanced degrees after graduation in a summer research program. It is hoped that these students will make a contribution to ongoing faculty research and, more importantly, will gain an appreciation for and an interest in a research career. To apply for this program, please COMPLETE THE APPLICATION BELOW, SIGN IT, AND RETURN IT ALONG WITH ONE FACULTY RECOMMENDATION LETTER AND A CURRENT OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT TO THE FOLLOWING ADDRESS BY 5:00 P.M.
