Eastwood College – Kafarshima Children – Our Purpose & Our Future Policy for Teaching Placement Elementary department A- Purpose of Practice Teaching: We ought to offer our trainee teachers the best exposure to teaching life in a school. By the end of the academic training year, the trainee teacher should earn the title of “Newly Qualified Teacher Status”. The Trainee Teacher will be able to see and experience all aspects of teaching. The TT will be able to apply the theories learned at University. This chance gives the TT a full idea of the upsides and downsides of teaching. Training is crucial for TT because they “learn on the ground.” This is an opportunity for them to make mistakes, assess their strengths and weaknesses in teaching and work on improving the skills they lack of. TT will then master the points below: -Professional values and practice with students, staff, and parents -Brush up on their knowledge of the subject they teach and the understanding of the curriculum -Plan and set targets for different students -Monitor students and assess them efficiently -Deliver efficient lessons and manage their classrooms. B- Student Interaction and Teaching -TTs follow the schedule given by the school. They start the term and end it accordingly. -TTs are to follow the school policy (dress code, discipline code, confidentiality and professionalism of the school for example: No I shirts, No sandals, TTs sign in and out, don’t discuss students’ matters in the staff room etc.) -The TT is considered one of the staff members and should be welcomed warmly in our school. C-School Expectations from Interns: -To dress appropriately ( according to the school dresscode) -To plan the lesson according to the scheme of work written by the teacher/coordinator -To write the lesson plan on a format given by the school -To meet with the mentor on a weekly basis and discuss the progress of students and other teaching matters. Every week, the mentor at school will talk about one aspect of teaching, such as week 1=National curriculum in Arabic/week2=planning lessons/week 3=the use of English in the lesson/week4=teaching grammar inductively etc. Page 1 of 3 -To attend coordination sessions. -To write evaluation reports at the end of the term. -To do break and lunch duties. -To be involved in extra curriculum activities. -To accompany the students when on excursion. (At least once) -To attend a parent/teacher conference. (at least once) -To inform the school when absent and to have emergency lesson plans or cover work available. D- University/TT expects from Mentors: -To hold regular meetings with The TT in school and the University tutor outside school. -To write an observation sheet for every lesson taught by the TT and give a copy to the TT -To give feedback on lessons and other aspects regarding teaching training -To update the TT on any changes in the timetable/ curriculum/staff/ students -To write an evaluation report on the TT and set targets for each term (with weaknesses and the strengths of the TT)at the end of each term. -To give the TT a booklet to keep records and notes of all meetings, observation sheets, lesson plans, curriculum, targets and especially the booklet with Professional Standards For Qualified Teacher Status. (PSFQTS will be completed by the end of the academic year in order for the TT’s teaching training to be validated) -To give the TT tips and strategies that help teaching difficult or challenging groups. -To help the TT in writing essays and provide her/him with relevant documents or books/ resources needed. -Be supportive when the TT is under stress between University and school work. -Explain to the TT all policies and procedures regarding the Special Need Department/program, the American and Lebanese programs we offer. -Update the TT on the most updated law regarding access arrangements and exemptions for Special educational needs students. -Never expect the TT to cover for an absent member of staff. Page 2 of 3 E-The Mentor’s School: -Disrespect for the school’s rules and regulations or failure to observe the terms of reference of the internship are grounds to annul the acceptance in consultation with methods course instructor. -Mentor’s school should provide a safe and a positive school environment to house interns and promote their professional growth. -Assign a school representative whose role is assisting in the placement of interns and providing feedback to the Interns’ University, through direct contact with the PTC Coordinator or method course instructors. - The TT is to be made familiar with policies and procedures. A separate paper will be signed by the TT to acknowledge on the points listed above. Page 3 of 3
