Cartographies of Translation: Ahdaf Soueif’s The Map of
Love Between English and Arabic
A talk by
Dr. Dima Ayoub (Georgetown University)
Thursday, 11 February 2016, 5:00 – 6:30 pm in West Hall 310
This talk focuses on Ahdaf Soueif’s novel The Map of Love and its Arabic
translation, Khāriṭat al-ḥubb (translated by Fātma Mūsa) by examining the
relationship between the Arabic and English languages at both the textual and
thematic level. By comparing the two texts, this talk problematizes notions of
domestication and foreignization in translation and further asks what happens
when a novel that is itself about Arabic-English translation is translated from
English into Arabic.
Dima Ayoub is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Arabic and
Islamic Studies at Georgetown University. Her research and teaching interests
include Translation Theory, Postcolonial Literature, Diasporic Arab Cinema, and
Gender and Sexuality Studies. More specifically, her work examines contemporary
literature by Arab writers and its intersection with the theory and practice of
translation. Dr Ayoub is a candidate for the position of Assistant Professor in
Translation Studies in the Department of English.
