SECC Minutes of 10/12/10 Meeting

The committee reviewed the list of proposed topics for the Thursday Professional Semester

Seminars. Dr. Dockers made the comment that there would be an orientation session during dead week for all student teachers preparing to teach in the Spring 2011 semester. The committee thought this was a great idea because student teachers usually have several questions that need to be answered before they start teaching and this would be a good time for that to happen.

The committee decided to keep the topics--Teachers and the Law, Administrators Panel,

Licensure, and Graduation. The following topics were suggested to be added:

Topic on Formal Evaluation as a Teacher (minimal requirements for both Kansas and

Missouri). Possibly include this as part of the administrators’ panel and follow up in the afternoon with specific information.

Topic on Professionalism (ie responsibility regarding being dependable, being told explicit consequences of actions such as breaking a contract)

Keep Classroom Management but maybe move to earlier in the semester. Dr. Jones reported some feedback from students that having classroom management before student teaching does not mean much. It is better to have this information while actually student teaching. Maybe add a second Classroom Management session. Cris Elliott noted that the College of Arts and Sciences has discussed placing classroom management in

General Education as a cultural class. Maybe classroom management could be considered as a diversity class.

Dr. Runyan noted that disposition is more important than knowledge when supervising student teachers.

Josh Johnson commented that it was important to make sure that student teachers know what they are required to teach so that they do not teach the wrong thing.

Dr. Coltharp was concerned (as well as Dr. Dixie Smith) that students were not aware of the requirement to collect and analyze data for assessment and in relation to No Child Left Behind requirements. Dr. Dockers noted that analysis expectations was going to be added to the handbook for cooperating teachers so they could help the student teachers learn what type of data needs to be collected and analyzed according to state and national standards.

Dr. Jones reported that he is concerned with the relationship between the student teachers and the teachers in the field. Some student teachers do not feel comfortable around their mentoring teacher and it’s important to make sure at the beginning that the relationship is good between the two.

Possible classrooms for orientation during dead week would be Grubbs 107 and 109 if available.

The E-Portfolio sequence and evaluation of Portfolio issues was discussed. There are three proposed submissions. The question arose of how the portfolios would be graded. It was suggested that course grades could be used as the grade for the portfolio and the student could submit a reflection paper about methods courses/teaching and learning that could be graded and evaluate if the student submitted everything necessary to complete the portfolio.

Another question was who would be responsible for grading the portfolio? How much time would faculty who graded the portfolio have to submit the grade? Some faculty have ownership and would like to grade their own students’ portfolios. Some departments with several portfolios could form a department committee to grade them.

Dr. Dockers will review the timeline necessary for portfolio grading and bring it to the next meeting.

Dr. Dixie Smith requested that the Teacher Education Department send a list of students who have begun using LiveText.

Discussion began about NCATE and future requirements. There needs to be a way to report the second field experience evaluation. Dr. Dockers clarified to the committee that instructors only need to report data for BSED majors from each department—not all students. It was requested that a list of BSED members be sent to all committee members just in case they think a person has completed and they have not.

Dr. Dockers noted that the start date for student teachers in the spring would be the first day of class in the public schools and not the first day of PSU classes. She asked that if there are any students who have a conflict with this to please see her.

Dr. Dockers also requested that all Teacher Education faculty send their course syllabi and lesson plans to her department as soon as possible for use in future NCATE planning.

Dr. Dockers also requested that all secondary education faculty send her a list of schools where they would prefer student teachers to be placed. This is in response to the request from the

National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. The committee asked that they be sent a list of where student teachers have been placed or are currently placed.

Dr. Lyle Morgan made the motion, seconded by Dr. John Oppliger, to approve the Concern

Form that was sent electronically to the committee. Motion passed.

Dr. Lyle Morgan made the motion, seconded by Mr. Gil Cooper, to keep the SAT score as a requirement for admission to Teacher Education but change the cut score to 1730 for Post 2005 students. Motion passed.

Meeting adjourned at 9:10 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,
